MAPPA

MAPPA anime news and releases, the studio behind Jujutsu Kaisen and Attack on Titan's final season.

Total Apex Take

MAPPA makes some of the best-looking anime on television right now, and it's doing it by running its staff into the ground to get there.

Founded by veteran producer Masao Maruyama, MAPPA built its reputation fast on "Jujutsu Kaisen," the backloaded final season of "Attack on Titan," and "Chainsaw Man," and it kept expanding by taking on more simultaneous high-profile productions than almost any other studio. That growth has come with a well-documented cost: animator testimonials and industry reporting have repeatedly flagged brutal schedules and burnout inside MAPPA, even as the studio's output keeps winning over audiences.

Our view is that MAPPA's house style — kinetic camera work, liberal 3D integration, bursts of extremely high frame-rate action — reads as spectacular precisely because it's unsustainable as a baseline, not despite it. The real story to watch isn't the next adaptation announcement, it's whether MAPPA's leadership can slow down enough to fix its labor practices before the industry-wide scrutiny on crunch catches up with its release slate.

About MAPPA

MAPPA is a Japanese animation studio founded in 2011 by veteran producer Masao Maruyama, which rose rapidly over the 2010s and 2020s to become one of the most prominent and in-demand anime studios in the industry. MAPPA is known for high-production-value adaptations across a wide range of genres, from the explosive action of Jujutsu Kaisen to the final, much-discussed season of Attack on Titan.

The studio has drawn attention both for its creative output and for industry discussion around the demanding production schedules behind some of its biggest hits, reflecting broader conversations about working conditions across the anime industry.
