Jurassic Park / World

Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies, Universal's dinosaur blockbuster franchise.

Total Apex Take

Jurassic World Rebirth is a genuine attempt at a soft reset after fatigue set in — the franchise's biggest challenge now is finding new stakes after three different “dinosaurs are loose” trilogies.

Bringing in Scarlett Johansson and a mostly new cast, with returning writer David Koepp from the original 1993 film, was a clear signal Universal knew the Owen-and-Claire era had run its course after “Dominion” drew a mixed-to-negative reception. Rebirth's more stripped-down, mission-based premise is a deliberate step back from Dominion's overstuffed attempt to tie every prior film's plot threads together.

Our honest take: the original 1993 film remains the best thing this franchise has ever made almost thirty years later, and every sequel's core challenge is the same one — you can keep escalating the dinosaur spectacle, but you can't easily recreate the sense of genuine wonder that came from audiences seeing believable dinosaurs on screen for the first time.

Worth watching: whether Rebirth's reception convinces Universal to keep making smaller, more contained Jurassic stories, or whether the pull toward bigger global-stakes sequels reasserts itself the way it did after the first Jurassic World reset the franchise in 2015.

About Jurassic Park / World

Jurassic Park is Universal Pictures' dinosaur-centered franchise, launched by Steven Spielberg's 1993 adaptation of Michael Crichton's novel about a theme park populated by cloned dinosaurs. The original trilogy was followed by the Jurassic World trilogy beginning in 2015, which relaunched the franchise for a new generation while continuing its core premise of dinosaurs and humans colliding on a catastrophic scale.

The franchise is widely credited with major advances in visual-effects filmmaking, blending practical animatronics with groundbreaking computer-generated imagery that influenced blockbuster filmmaking for decades afterward.

Based on Michael Crichton's 1990 novel, the franchise built its identity on blending practical animatronics with then-groundbreaking CGI dinosaurs under director Steven Spielberg, who directed the first two films and has remained an executive producer on every installment since. The series relaunched as Jurassic World in 2015, moving the setting to a fully operational dinosaur theme park before expanding further in subsequent sequels.
