Blumhouse Productions

Blumhouse Productions movies, the studio behind modern horror hits like M3GAN and The Purge.

Total Apex Take

Blumhouse built an empire on cheap, original horror, and it's now visibly pivoting toward the franchise-sequel model it used to be the alternative to.

Jason Blum's low-budget-high-concept formula produced one of 2023's biggest surprise hits in Five Nights at Freddy's, and the studio has leaned into that success since — Freddy's sequel is in motion, M3GAN 2.0 arrived in 2025 as a bigger, broader follow-up that cooled off relative to the sleeper-hit original, and The Black Phone 2 extended another of Blumhouse's modern original-horror properties into sequel territory. The studio has also pushed further into theme-park and experiential business through Halloween Horror Nights tie-ins and widened its distribution relationships beyond its longtime Universal partnership.

Our take: there's a real tension in Blumhouse chasing PG-13 franchise tentpoles like Five Nights and M3GAN while its brand identity was built on cheap, R-rated, go-for-broke originals like the first Purge or Get Out — the sequelized, broader-audience version is more reliably profitable but is starting to look like every other studio's playbook rather than the disruptive one Blumhouse used to run.

Keep watching whether Blumhouse still greenlights the genuinely weird low-budget swings alongside the sequels — the health of that pipeline, not the sequel box office, is the real test of whether Blumhouse is still the original-horror engine it built its reputation on.

About Blumhouse Productions

Blumhouse Productions is a production company founded by Jason Blum in 2000 that became one of the most influential forces in modern horror by pioneering a low-budget, high-concept production model. By keeping budgets small and creative risk-taking high, Blumhouse has produced a long run of commercially successful horror and thriller franchises.

The studio's output includes original franchise launches as well as high-profile legacy sequels and reboots of classic horror properties, and it has become a go-to partner for both emerging and established horror filmmakers.
