Assassin's Creed

Assassin's Creed news and guides, Ubisoft's long-running historical action franchise.

Total Apex Take

Shadows is a genuine creative high point for the series — arriving at a moment when Ubisoft's business is under serious strain.

Setting “Assassin's Creed Shadows” in Sengoku-era Japan with a dual-protagonist structure — a trained shinobi and the historical samurai Yasuke — gave the series one of its most requested settings ever and some of its best mission design since the Ezio trilogy, after several entries that leaned harder into generic open-world checklist design than sharp historical storytelling.

That quality lands awkwardly alongside Ubisoft's broader troubles: delayed and cancelled projects, layoffs, and a publisher-wide credibility problem with both players and investors that no single game's reception fully offsets.

Our take: Shadows is worth playing on its own merits, but it's also a useful test case for whether “bigger budget, more open-world systems” is still the right formula for this series, or whether Ubisoft needs to make these games smaller and more focused to match what Shadows actually did well.

About Assassin's Creed

Assassin's Creed is Ubisoft's long-running action-adventure franchise following the centuries-old conflict between the Assassin Brotherhood and the Templar Order, often framed through a modern-day character exploring ancestral memories. Since 2007, the series has visited numerous historical settings, from Renaissance Italy to feudal Japan, blending open-world exploration with parkour-based movement and stealth combat.

In its more recent entries, the franchise shifted toward larger role-playing-game-influenced structures with Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla, before returning to a tighter stealth focus with Assassin's Creed Shadows.
