Filmmaker John Wilson is directing a documentary about Harry Styles’ residency at Madison Square Garden, according to Pitchfork. The project will chronicle the pop star’s 30-night run at the arena, which the venue has called its longest single-engagement residency ever.
The Harry Styles MSG residency documentary is being produced by Universal Pictures Content Group, Peanut World Pictures and Styles himself, Pitchfork reported. According to Pitchfork. The residency began in August and is scheduled to conclude at the end of this month.
What Was Announced
Styles launched the residency in support of his album Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally, which he released in March. Wilson, best known as the creator of HBO’s “How To With John Wilson,” will direct the documentary covering the run. Pitchfork reported no further production details beyond the director, producers and subject of the film.
The project marks Wilson’s first documentary built around a single artist. He most recently worked in music with Bon Iver, directing the music video for “Everything Is Peaceful Love” off Bon Iver’s album SABLE, fABLE.
What It Means For Fans
For Styles followers, the documentary offers a look back at a residency that set a venue record at one of the most storied arenas in the country. The 30-night booking distinguishes the run from typical multi-date stands and gives Wilson a large amount of ground to cover from a single engagement.
No title, release date, runtime or specific thematic focus for the documentary has been announced. Pitchfork’s report did not detail how much of the film will draw from live performances versus behind-the-scenes material.
Background
Wilson built his reputation on “How To With John Wilson,” an HBO series known for its observational, idiosyncratic style. His pivot to an artist-focused documentary with Styles represents new territory for the filmmaker, who has largely worked outside traditional music documentary formats before this project and his recent Bon Iver video.
What’s Next
Styles’ Madison Square Garden residency wraps at the end of October, 2026, which will close out the live run the documentary is built around. No release window for the film has been confirmed, and further details on distribution are expected to come from Universal Pictures Content Group or Styles’ camp as production continues.
