George Clooney addressed the death of Presley Gerber publicly for the first time on Friday evening, telling Entertainment Tonight at the Albies that the loss has devastated his family’s close friends. Gerber, the son of Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber, died Sept. 20 at a sober living facility in Santa Monica from an apparent overdose. He was 27.

“Quite honestly, it’s one of the most devastating things that’s happened to our family,” Clooney said, according to Entertainment Tonight. “And their family is just, as you can imagine, it’s the worst thing that could happen to the family.”

Clooney, stepping out for the Albies awards event, also told the outlet the family is not yet ready to discuss the loss in detail. “I don’t think we’re even in the position of even being able to talk about it,” he said.

George Clooney’s Comments On Presley Gerber

Clooney and his wife, Amal Clooney, have longtime ties to the Crawford-Gerber family. George Clooney co-founded Casamigos Tequila with Rande Gerber in 2013, and the two couples have remained close friends for years.

According to Just Jared, George and Amal Clooney traveled to Los Angeles to join the family after Presley Gerber’s death and have been helping with arrangements. A source told the outlet that the couple and other close friends have been taking shifts staying with the family so they are not left alone, adding that George and Amal are “absolutely beside themselves with grief.”

A separate source described Clooney as completely shattered by Presley Gerber’s death and said he is committed to supporting the family in the months and years ahead.

What It Means For The Gerber Family

Presley Gerber’s cause of death has been listed as deferred pending completion of an autopsy, according to Page Six. A source told Page Six that Presley had seemed off in the period before his death.

Presley’s younger sister, Kaia Gerber, 25, is also grieving the loss. A source said Kaia was struggling to come to terms with her brother’s death, describing the siblings as “insanely close.” According to Just Jared, Kaia had spoken publicly about her older brother’s addiction issues just a few weeks before he died.

Background

Presley Gerber grew up in the public eye as the son of supermodel Cindy Crawford and businessman Rande Gerber, whose friendship with Clooney extends beyond their business partnership at Casamigos. Clooney’s remarks at the Albies marked his first public statement since Presley’s death was reported in September.

What’s Next

No additional public statements from the Gerber or Crawford family have been reported since Clooney’s comments at the Albies. The results of Presley Gerber’s autopsy had not been released as of Friday, according to Page Six.
