The 2026 ZA Rhinos Inspire a Nation Despite Being Eliminated
South Africa has always had mentions in Esports. CS: GO and DOTA 2 are the predominant ones. Overwatch was never at the top of anyone’s list for South Africa. That may have shifted this past weekend with the OWWC Conference Cup. The ZA Rhinos, the team representing the Rainbow Nation, were on the cusp of qualification for the online qualifiers. However, it was not their day. Ultimately, they shone on the international stage and made not only the local Overwatch community, but the ZA Esports community as a whole proud.
The ZA Rhinos Kick off With Three Wins

South Africa has not had a great history in the OWWC. In their two previous appearances, the country won one game. Pressure mounted on the ZA Rhinos as they kicked off the OWWC Conference Cup against Team Switzerland. After one match, they achieved what no South African team had done before. They won a series, and they did it comfortably. The Rhinos would go on to win their next two series against Team Israel and Team Greece. After three series, the Rhinos had not dropped a single point. Yes, they had a favorable draw, but the expectations were palpable.
Unfortunately, their favorable draws would end there. They would face Team Germany, Team Austria, and Team Poland in their matches. Those three teams all finished within the top four of the tournament. They would go on to lose 2-0 to all three teams, but the fight was there. Despite the odds, they never gave up. They nearly beat Austria on Aatlis. Had one fight gone differently, we could be looking at a completely different day. But alas, it was not meant to be this weekend.
A Nation Believed
At the start of the Conference Cup, the community did not know what would happen. Of course, we all believed in the team, but there were doubts. The rest of the competition was fierce, but we backed our rhinos, and they delivered. They turned blind faith and trust into genuine belief. They got us on our feet. Every player showed what it means to be a South African. While many do not reside in the country, they shine as South Africans.
As a country, we always look to the Springboks to unite a nation. At the very least, for this weekend, there was unity within the South African Overwatch community. That is all due to the ZA Rhinos and their performance at the Conference Cup.
The ZA Rhinos Story Concludes For Now
The loss will see the end of the ZA Rhinos for the time being. But what they have done will live on. There is always next year, as long as we have an opportunity again. The Rhinos showed that it is possible. Maybe next year will be our year, and it will all be thanks to the groundwork laid this weekend. To Germany, Poland, Ireland, Austria, and Portugal, congratulations on your qualification and good luck in the online qualifiers.
A Final Thank You

The ending is bittersweet, but we must thank everyone who made this possible. Firstly, we must thank Blizzard Entertainment for allowing us to participate. Then, to the amazing ZA Rhinos committee that got everything going. The work you put into ensuring we had the best team possible with the best resources does not go unnoticed. Then, to the players, thank you for all the countless hours you spent preparing for the Conference Cup. All those scrim, comp, and vod hours clearly paid off. The result may not have been what you wanted, but hang those heads high! No DNA, just RSA!
