Ryan Reynolds Teases Deadpool’s Future In The MCU: ‘I’ve Got Stuff Written’
Ryan Reynolds, the man behind Marvel’s beloved and irreverent antihero Deadpool, recently shared insights into the character’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In an interview with Sunday Today, Reynolds revealed that while he has ideas for the character’s return, the character’s days as a standalone lead may be over.
Ryan Reynolds Reveals New Team Player Deadpool

Reynolds confirmed that he has “some stuff kind of written” for the character’s next appearance but clarified that it won’t be for a fourth movie. Instead, he envisions the character taking on a supporting role in future MCU projects.
“I don’t think I am ever going to center him again,” Reynolds said. “He is a supporting character. He is a guy who is great in a group.”
This shift in focus aligns with Reynolds’ belief that the character thrives as an outsider interacting with larger-than-life teams like the Avengers or X-Men. According to Reynolds, his humor and coping mechanisms work best when juxtaposed against the more traditional heroes of the Marvel Universe.
The End of Standalone Films?
Reynolds explained that centering the character in standalone films often requires stripping the character down to his core and putting him in dire situations. While this formula worked brilliantly in the first three films, Reynolds feels that revisiting it for a fourth time might feel repetitive.
“Centric Deadpool works best if you take everything away from him and put his back against the wall,” Reynolds said. “I can’t really do that again. A fourth time feels a little iterative and redundant.”
However, Reynolds assured fans that the character’s arc is far from over. He hinted at a fulfilling and powerful journey for the character, even if it unfolds in a supporting capacity.
Deadpool’s MCU Journey So Far
The iconic character officially entered the MCU in 2024 with Deadpool and Wolverine, a box office juggernaut that grossed $1.3 billion worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film in history. The film marked a seamless transition for the character into the MCU, blending the Merc With The Mouth’s signature humor with the larger Marvel universe.
The first two Deadpool films, released in 2016 and 2018, were also massive hits, each earning around $780 million globally. With such a successful track record, it’s no surprise that fans are eager to see what’s next for the Merc with a Mouth.
What’s Next for Deadpool?
While Reynolds has downplayed rumors of Deadpool appearing in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, speculation continues to swirl about the character’s future MCU appearances. Reynolds has expressed interest in having the character interact with the Avengers or X-Men without fully joining their ranks, maintaining his status as an outsider.
“Deadpool works so well appearing with the X-Men and Avengers, but he always needs to stay an outsider,” Reynolds said. “If and when he does become an Avenger or X-Man, we’re at the end of his journey.”
For now, fans can rest assured that the unique brand of humor and chaos will continue to find a place in the MCU, even if it’s not at the center of the action.
