Ahead of its 2027 Release Rumors State Assassin’s Creed: Hexe Will Not Have the Magic the Game was Recognized For

Logo for "Assassin's Creed: Codename Hexe" features a dark, mystical theme with twig-based emblem, circular symbols, and an eerie, mysterious atmosphere.

Assassin’s Creed: Hexe is the newest original game in the franchise and has had fans feeling excitement for the series yet again. This time, we’ll be going back in time during the witch trials of the Holy Roman Empire, where we’ll explore the dark history of one of the greatest and most influential empires in world history.

According to the devs, Assassin’s Creed: Hexe will be the darkest Assassin’s Creed entry to date, exploring paranoia, dark faith, and demonic corruption, which is fitting considering how bleak this part of history is. With the release date of Assassin’s Creed: Hexe getting closer, new rumors have emerged on what players can expect from the game, and according to these rumors, this game might not have a defining feature of the series.

Assassin’s Creed: Hexe Will Lose Its Magic

With an expected release date coming later this year, Assassin’s Creed: Hexe is a hot game release that people have been following for a while now. Fans of the series expressed a lot of excitement for this one, especially since the devs wanted to make this installment a lot darker than previous games. However, even through all the excitement, Ubisoft has had a pretty rough several months, from Assassin’s Creed: Hexe creative director Clint Hocking walking away from Ubisoft in late February, to game director Benoit Richer announcing his departure from Ubisoft to join Servo Games, the upcoming game may be taking a major turn in its gameplay and narrative.

Reports from last year leaked a good portion of information on the game, including the plot, which will center around a new character named Elsa who is seeking revenge in relation to her mother’s trial and execution over suspicion of witchcraft. More leaks have stated that Elsa would have supernatural abilities, including the ability to possess a cat; however, new rumors indicate this will no longer be the case. According to YouTuber and Twitch Streamer j0nathan, new game director Jean Guesdon will forego many of the supernatural aspects of the game, opting for a more traditional feel closely resembling other games in the franchise. Here’s the translated X post on j0nathan’s official X account:

If you want a little behind-the-scenes info on the game (which might be related to this departure), it’s that since Jean Guesdon was put in charge of the Assassin’s Creed franchise in February, he’s decided to get rid of everything that was “magical” in Hexe. For example, we were supposed to control a cat, well, ultimately that’s been canceled.

Guesdon is an Assassin’s Creed veteran developer who joined Ubisoft in 2005. He was credited as creative director for Assassin’s Creed Black Flag and Assassin’s Creed Origins, and given his experience and close relationship with the series, many people have taken this rumor more positively than you might expect. Many people believe this is a sign that the series is getting back to its roots, with j0nathan noting that it may even push up the release date for Assassin’s Creed: Hexe.

Assassin’s Creed: Hexe is Ubisoft’s new flagship title in the series, and is described as a very different type of Assassin’s Creed game. In an official blog post titled Assassin’s Creed: Into 2026, Jean Guesdon stated that fans can expect a “unique, darker, narrative-driven Assassin’s Creed experience, set during a pivotal moment in history.” A 30-second trailer was released for the game, which definitely set the tone for the game while keeping fans on their toes.

Last year, rumors swirled around the internet. which indicates that the setting is in 16th-century Central Europe during the Holy Roman Empire, focusing on witchcraft and the witch trials of that era. Ubisoft has yet to confirm this particular detail; however, it’s more than likely to be the case. Assassin’s Creed: Hexe is being developed by Ubisoft Montreal, the developer behind the entire Assassin’s Creed series. Clint Hocking had been heading development on Assassin’s Creed: Hexe; however, he parted ways with the company in February.

Ubisoft has been experiencing a lot of changes, especially within the development team heading Assassin’s Creed: Hexe. However, I don’t believe fans should worry too much, and I think we’ll see a lot more updates on development for the game within the next several months.
