MSI 2026 Match Preview – G2 Esports Versus T1 – Old Foes Battle for Glory Once More
G2 Esports and T1 have met numerous times at international events. They meet again at this MSI. Their most recent meeting was at the 2025 Esports World Cup. T1 were the 2-0 victors in that series. The last time G2 beat T1 in a best-of-five series was at the 2019 World Championship. That was one of two wins for the EU representative that year, both in the semi-finals. T1 should have the edge, but can G2 work their magic?
The Long Lower Bracket Run
No team has played more games than T1 at this MSI. They started their run in the Play-Ins. They have played five series, winning four, losing one. All four wins were 3-0, while their only loss was 3-2 to Bilibili Gaming. A win in this series will almost guarantee that they play the most games at MSI. G2 has won a series 3-2 and lost the other one 3-0.
Featured Matchup

Labrov Versus Keria
Labrov had a difficult task in their recent series. He needed to match Delight’s roams and impact. He did that in Game 1, but then tailed off for the rest of the series. It will not be any easier against T1. Keria can run a game at any time. He did that against Bilibili Gaming on Pyke, and in so many previous games. Labrov does not need to outperform Keria, but matching his tempo is crucial.
A Better Style For G2
G2 is not the best laning or early game team. They prefer to play the macro game and out-teamfight opponents. We saw in their series against Hanwha Life Esports that they could not contend with HLE’s aggression. T1 is an aggressive team, but not in the same way as HLE. They are not nearly as dominant and tend to play way looser. We have already seen at this tournament that T1 can fall behind in the early game. They usually bring the games back through superior map movements and outstanding team fighting. G2 can match T1 in that regard, but that is easier said than done. One mistake in the late game, despite a significant lead, will cause a loss.
Where Do the Drafts Land?
G2 is one of the more creative teams in drafts. Against HLE, BrokenBlade picked three niche top lane champions. Only Warwick saw value. But that is not the only role they can get creative in. All five players have pocket picks. It might be necessary to catch T1 off guard in the series.
On the other hand, T1 regularly drafts themselves into a deficit. In game three against FURIA, they willingly played Kalista into Nasus. They won the game through better mechanics and teamfighting. T1 will need to be careful against G2 and their unique champion picks. More bad drafts, and T1 might not make it to the top four at MSI.
Prediction

G2 Esports 1-3 T1
G2 is, without a doubt, a dangerous team, but they have not shown enough to warrant getting the nod over T1. They may have beaten Top Esports, but the start to that series was not ideal. Also, you can attribute some of their wins to Top Esports crumbling. Once they met stern opposition in Hanwha Life Esports, G2 crumbled. Perkz even said in an interview that the team collapsed. You can not afford to do that against T1. They will sweep games from underneath you, and that will hurt mentally. T1 might give G2 a game by playing too loose, or having an impossible draft.
Top Four Awaits
The winner of the series will advance to the next round of MSI. They will earn their top four spot in the tournament. They will play against the winner of the Team Secret Whales and LYON series. The loser will see their run in Korea come to an end.
