Since the release of God of War Ragnarok in 2022, developer Santa Monica Studios has been pretty hush-hush about the next installment to the series; however, recent reports confirm that the next installment will not only be a spin-off game centering around Faye, Kratos’ deceased wife in the game, but will also feature multiple world mythologies. This is a pretty interesting concept, as it will open up the world of the God of War series and let us see other mythologies from different cultures represented in the usual God of War fashion.

God of War Franchise Introduces East Asian Mythologies in Next Game

When you think about the God of War series, the franchise is steeped in European mythology and lore, starting with Greek mythology. Kratos is an actual figure from Greek mythology. In Greek mythology, Kratos is the son of the Titan Pallas and the Oceanid Styx and was the brutal enforcer loyal to Zeus. According to Greek mythology, he is the divine personification of strength, might, and power. But of course, the God of War game series has its own interpretation of Kratos’s story.

The game definitely changes a lot of details when it comes to Kratos. According to the game’s lore, Kratos is a demigod, son of Zeus, and hates the gods and Olympus. Kratos is portrayed as a vengeful and hateful demigod, though he definitely still personifies power and might throughout the series, even after Kratos leaves Greece and settles down in Midgard. The series explores and interprets these mythologies in very interesting and thrilling ways, and it’s really exciting that Santa Monica Studios is willing to pivot from European mythologies and go Far East in the next game.

According to a report made by MP1st, the unannounced game will feature elements from various mythologies, specifically mentioning Chinese and Japanese mythologies. The report also mentions the new game will feature Mayan mythology; however, that has yet to be confirmed by Santa Monica Studios. At the very least, we know the next game will be full of exciting new ideas and explore a new world, which will expand the God of War universe even further.

Back in 2023, rumors came out that stated that the new God of War game would be a prequel starring Faye, Kratos’ deceased wife. The rumor, which was posted on a Reddit post, specifically stated that the spinoff game will feature Freya and Tyr; however, the author of the post has since corrected the statement, confirming the game will actually star Faye. Last month, video game leaker NatetheHate claimed that the game would center on the character of Faye, Kratos’ deceased wife.

It’s assumed the spinoff will be an original storyline before Kratos and Faye met. There’s still a lot of information that has yet to be released about the next God of War game; however, Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson said in a podcast that he has heard the next mainline God of War game will be announced this month. Rumors speculate that Sony may release a new State of Play or PlayStation Presentation this month, and people are expecting to see some kind of announcement for the next God of War game during these presentations. However, this has yet to be confirmed.

Also, with all the rumors that have been circulating on the internet about this new installment to the series, we can definitely expect an official announcement from Santa Monica Studios within the year, given how busy the series has been, with the recent announcement of the God of War Trilogy Remake and Sons of Sparta, which was released in February. It’s definitely exciting to see the series making headway now, and I can’t wait to hear an report more announcements on the game.
