Enshrouded: How the ‘Forging the Path’ Update Transforms the Flameborn
With the game Enshrouded headed to leave Early Access, their most recent update launched on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, and unleashed a brand new way for Flameborn to grow within the world of Embervale. A unique take on the survival crafting genre with intriguing landscapes and beautiful scenery, it offers a way to play to suit many different styles. As the last hope of a dying race, the job of the Flameborn is to purge the Shroud that has plagued the kingdom and return it to its natural beauty.
Will you embark on the adventure alone, or bring friends to help secure victory?
Beware the Shroud
When first loading the game, the fresh new Flameborn will encounter the first moment of Shroud nearly immediately, and they will find themselves wary of proceeding further. In what feels like a mineshaft of impenetrable doom, equipped with nothing but a torch, it is the Flameborn’s duty to go forth. When just starting, the player can survive up to 5 minutes within the Shroud, but with potions and different food items, the duration can be extended. Eventually, the player will be brought to a safe location called the Flame Altar, where the first base in Enshrouded can be built.
The bases, along with the character skill tree, can also extend the time in the Shroud through the survivalist branch and by strengthening the Flame Altar. Every level of Strengthened Flame will increase the base time by 1 minute. This will be very important in further exploration and possible combat situations in the Shroud. Something else of note, the Flame Altar is where Flameborn can upgrade their Flame as well as modify or reset the Skill Tree. Upgrading the Altar will expand the range to build in, granting the ability to create towns at each altar.
Forging the Path of the Flameborn
There are a lot of options and variations for building the skill tree of the Flameborn. With unparalleled versatility, there are different class types to choose from. It genuinely comes down to how the player wants to interact and engage with the game. At present, in the Early Access stages of development, 12 skill trees exist and are color-coded; one could easily pick 3 different skill trees and become the best assassin tank that self-heals. Better than that, though, thanks to the new update named Forging the Path, new skills were added with the ability to zoom out to see the different forks for each pathway.
It seems the devs are forging their own path into the gaming-dev sphere as they come out swinging with update after update, even enhancing the tools used in gathering materials for base-building and gear crafting. Many players have already been voicing their joy at the new tools, weapons, and gear-upgradeability paths being laid out to increase character utility, regardless of their classes. Initially, crafted gear such as tools and armor would be a common rarity; with the update, they were converted into upgradable items when loading into the updated version.
As of update 8, crafted armor will be of rare quality, no more common garb for the Flameborn! Hoarders out there who gathered all the armor, wards, shields, and rings and stashed them away for a rainy day can now recycle them for more runes to upgrade gear the player actually cares about.
Integral to the Flameborn
As progression into the game happens, players will find survivors who will be there to guide the Flameborn on their path to prosperity. The first one that can be found is usually the Blacksmith, Oswald Anders, unless the player just really doesn’t want to follow the rules and decides to completely skip one of the most integral NPCs in the game. Not that I would personally know anything about that and end up dead twice in the Shroud because I wanted an adventure and not to be told what to do.
Once the Flameborn has awoken Oswald Anders, they can head back to base and finally make the wand to bring him out into the base to start building the good stuff.
The Blacksmith will have some useful information to give as well, alongside being the Flameborn’s warrior class guide. After saving Oswald, information will be given to the Flameborn on how to find the other two class-masters, the Huntress and Alchemist. Athalan Skree, the Huntress, is the guide for the ranger class, with Balthazar, the Alchemist, being a guide for the mage class. First, they must complete the Ancient Spire in the Springlands; after that, finding both class guides is super easy!
Personal Tips and Tricks

The first thing I did in my game was spend around 15-20 hours just building my base after obtaining Oswald. I laid each block of stone bit by bit, having gone into the game completely blind. I had not realized the building hammer made in the beginning would make building so much easier. Sure, some stone blocks may need to be placed individually, but for the most part, the hammer building tool is the best friend of builders.
Warning: Physics does not matter in the game! One can easily terraform themselves into a ditch and end up with no tool to dig the way back out. Likewise, one can build and then dismantle things and have random blocks floating where they ought not to be… Like I did. Anyone who played 7 Days To Die will know this: always dig in steps!
With the new update, check out the amazing skill tree that was updated. They adjusted keybinding for both keyboard and controllers, so please definitely take the time to look through the update for these functionalities! There’s so much life being breathed into Enshrouded, with the hope of a full release in the fall. Keep your eyes peeled!
