Katy Mixon will guest-star in season 6 of ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” a source confirmed to TVLine on Sept. 30. The “American Housewife” star appears in the new season 6 trailer, picking a fight with Melissa Schemmenti on her first day in the building.

Katy Mixon’s ‘Abbott Elementary’ role

ABC has not named Mixon’s character or said how many episodes she will appear in. The trailer shows her walking into Melissa’s classroom in a pink tracksuit and staking her claim right away: “That is my chair.”

Melissa answers by flipping her hair and pointing to “the hierarchy around here.” Mixon’s character flips her hair right back. “I’m not going anywhere,” she says. TVLine speculated that she might be a former teacher.

Katy Mixon, now credited as Katy Mixon Greer, played Connecticut mom Katie Otto for five seasons on ABC’s “American Housewife,” which was canceled in 2021, TVLine noted. Her other TV credits include “Eastbound & Down” and “Mike & Molly.”

What else the season 6 trailer shows

The trailer packs in several storylines, according to TVLine:

  • Gregory gets yelled at by angry parents as he settles in as assistant principal.
  • Ava tracks the superintendent down on a golf course to confront him.
  • Melissa becomes the school’s union representative.
  • Janine’s ex, Tariq, returns.

‘Abbott Elementary’ season 6 premieres Oct. 7

“Abbott Elementary” returns Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 8:30 p.m. EDT on ABC. The season 5 finale left Abbott absorbing students after the district closed several schools, so the halls will be more crowded.

Gregory’s promotion is also set to create friction. “He takes the job very, very seriously,” executive producer Justin Halpern told TVLine, adding that he and Ava “have different styles, different philosophies, so there’ll be a little bit of tension there.”

Fans are also waiting to see whether Gregory proposes to Janine after he asked O’Shon about engagement rings in the finale. Executive producer Patrick Schumacker would only say, “What I will say is we carry through with our storylines.”

Off the show, “Abbott Elementary” creator and star Quinta Brunson is also developing a Betty Boop film. For more on the fall TV season, follow our TV and streaming news.
