Netflix Unveils Animated Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory; A Modern Twist On The Classic Tale
We have seen plenty of golden tickets over the years, but Netflix is preparing to open the factory doors in a completely new way. The streaming giant recently announced Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory, a brand-new animated movie that reimagines the beloved Roald Dahl classic.
Set for release in 2027, the film promises a fresh, contemporary take on the eccentric candy maker and the children who cross his path. With a stellar voice cast and a wildly different plot, this is not just another standard retelling of the book. Let us look at what makes this upcoming animated adventure so unique, who is bringing it to life, and what fans can expect.
Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory: A Modern Twist on a Beloved Classic

Forget the chocolate rivers and innocent factory tours you remember. Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory takes the source material and flips it completely upside down.
The story takes place in modern-day London and introduces us to a very different version of Willy Wonka. As the film begins, Wonka has just finished serving time behind bars. His crime? Turning a child into a blueberry during his infamous golden ticket contest. Having paid his debt to society, Wonka returns to his factory hoping to bring some sweetness back to a bitter world.
However, a new group of kids stands in his way. The film introduces Charlie Paley, a modern teenager facing eviction. Desperate to save their homes, Charlie and his group of friends plot a daring heist. Their goal is to break into the heavily guarded factory and steal a priceless Wonka Bar. Naturally, things do not go exactly according to plan. The kids quickly find out that breaking into a magical candy factory is far more dangerous than they bargained for. Here is the official synopsis from the studio.
“Willy Wonka (Waititi) has spent the years since the Golden Ticket contest behind bars (not the chocolate kind) for the crime of turning a child into a blueberry. Having served his time, Wonka returns to his factory determined to add a little sweetness to a bitter world. But one thing stands in his way: teenager Charlie Paley (Connor) and his friends. Facing eviction, this next generation of “rotten” kids plot to break into the factory, nab a priceless Wonka Bar, and save their homes. But like many before them who enter the fantastical world of the factory, these kids are in for a bit more than they can chew.”
The Voices Behind the Mayhem
To pull off such an unhinged premise, Netflix assembled an incredible voice cast. Taika Waititi steps into the iconic purple coat to voice Willy Wonka. Waititi, who also serves as an executive producer on the project, is no stranger to balancing humor with heart. His eccentric energy makes him a perfect fit for a slightly mischievous, post-prison version of the legendary chocolatier.
Voicing the new lead character, Charlie Paley, is Kit Connor. Coming off his Emmy-winning run on Heartstopper and his recent voice work in The Wild Robot, Connor brings a relatable charm to the role. He noted that the film captures the spirit of the original story while updating it to reflect the contemporary London he knows and loves.
A Powerhouse Creative Team
Bringing a totally original vision to a legacy property requires serious animation talent. Netflix tapped co-directors Jared Stern and Elaine Bogan to lead the project. Stern brings his comedic chops from The LEGO Batman Movie, while Bogan lends her expertise from projects like Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia.
The visual magic will be handled by Sony Pictures Imageworks, the powerhouse studio behind stunning films like Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and The Sea Beast. The directors have openly stated that their goal is to make the movie delightfully twisted and wildly imaginative, fully utilizing the limitless possibilities of animation.
Getting Ready for 2027
This movie is the result of years of development following Netflix’s acquisition of the Roald Dahl Story Company. It represents a bold new chapter for the franchise, stepping away from direct adaptations to tell an entirely new story in the same universe.
Fans will have to wait a little while longer to see the heist unfold, as Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory will not hit screens until 2027. Until then, we can only imagine what kind of wild, candy-coated traps Willy Wonka has waiting for a new generation of rule-breakers.
