Julianne Moore award: Rome Film Fest’s remarkable 2026 honor
A Julianne Moore award is headed to Rome: The Oscar winner will receive a lifetime achievement prize at the Rome Film Festival, and Jesse Eisenberg, who directed her new film “The Debut,” will hand it to her. Salvatore Nastasi, president of the Fondazione Cinema per Roma, the body that runs the festival, announced the honor in a statement, Variety reported Oct. 1.
Julianne Moore award comes with an Italian premiere
Moore is expected in Rome for the Italian premiere of “The Debut,” according to Variety. Eisenberg will present the Julianne Moore award during her visit.
The 21st edition of the festival runs Oct. 13-25. Moore, Eisenberg and co-star Paul Giamatti are among the guests listed for this year’s event, Italian outlet Il Nord Est reported.
A busy fall for ‘The Debut’
The Rome prize is the newest festival honor tied to the film, and the latest Julianne Moore award of the season. Moore accepted the Zurich Film Festival’s Golden Icon Award in September, when “The Debut” made its international bow in Switzerland. The movie first screened at the Telluride Film Festival, where it drew strong reviews, Variety reported.
In the film, Moore plays Mona Friedman, a timid housewife who lands a tiny part in a community theater production. She throws herself into the role as an all-in Method actor and will fight anyone, including the show’s controlling director, to protect it.
Variety chief film critic Owen Gleiberman called the movie “a twisted love letter to the glory of community theater” and praised “the utterly astonishing performance of Julianne Moore.”
“The Debut” is the second time Moore has worked with Eisenberg as a director. She starred in his first feature, “When You Finish Saving the World,” in 2022. The new film is his third as a director. A24 will open it in select U.S. theaters Dec. 11 before a wide release Dec. 25, Hypebeast reported.
Moore’s history with Rome and the awards circuit
This is not the first Julianne Moore award from Rome. The festival gave her an acting award in 2010, praising her ability to move between Hollywood studio films and independent movies, The Associated Press reported at the time.
Moore won the best actress Oscar for “Still Alice.” She also earned Academy Award nominations for “Boogie Nights,” “The End of the Affair,” “The Hours” and “Far From Heaven.”
Her festival trophies span Europe’s three biggest events. She was named best actress at Venice for “Far From Heaven,” at Berlin for “The Hours” and at Cannes for “Maps to the Stars.”
