Hayden Panettiere was born on Aug. 21, 1989, and began a lifetime career on the silver screen before she was a year old. Sadly, this young actress passed away on Aug. 16, 2026, five days before her 37th birthday. Fans, friends, and family members are still reeling as the news feels impossible at such a young age.

Instead of dwelling on what could have been, let’s take a look at where Panettiere was, where her heart lay, beyond the family she cherished and fans who watched her grow up before their very eyes. As a gift to the being who was taken, let us explore the advocacy that meant the world to her.

Panettiere: Save The Whales

Panettiere had interviews covered by multiple outlets, but Variety’s Power of Youth interview shed a bit of insight into her passion behind her position with The Whaleman Foundation, which she served as a prominent spokesperson and Ambassador for, and their Save The Whales Again! Campaign. By the time of her interview, she revealed she had already been working with them for seven years, after the founder, Jeff Pantukhoff, pulled her aside to show her footage of dolphins and whales.

Her love of animals led her to join Pantukhoff’s efforts, which led to Panettiere and another Whaleman spokesperson, Isabel Lucas, joining him in Taiji for a peaceful protest against Japan’s annual dolphin-killing event happening every Sept. through April. The Oct. 2007 protest team included Pantukhoff, an Australian colleague and surfer, Dave Rastovich, Panettiere, Lucas, and a few others, and things escalated when the fishermen went after them. Pantukhoff caught the attacks on camera, along with a team from the Oceanic Preservation Society that was recording.

According to The Whaleman’s page, these recordings eventually went viral, creating a worldwide media frenzy. The footage was featured in the 2009 movie “The Cove,” an Academy Award-winning documentary film. Despite the attention and frenzy created by the footage, these events still happen and are considered the largest dolphin massacre in the world. The Whaleman reports that in 2023, over 800 dolphins died, but the horror lies with the captive dolphins and marine parks that pay up to $100,000 per captive dolphin.

Panettiere hoped to inspire, letting others know they could make a difference too. Find something that speaks to them and find out how to effect change to make the world a better place.

Shedding Light: Discovering Postpartum Depression

According to E! News in Sept 2015, Panettiere spoke up about having postpartum depression after the birth of her daughter, Kaya Klitschko, in Dec. 2014. This revelation came during an interview on “Live! With Kelly and Michael” when asked about the character she portrayed in the Country Music series “Nashville.” She said that many women experience it, but that it’s a spectrum and can vary in how it is experienced. She spoke candidly of this, saying that she didn’t have harmful thoughts against her daughter, and that women needed to know they aren’t alone.

What made it impactful was the implication that many say it isn’t real or is just in their heads; Panettiere speaking about it gave other women the knowledge that they aren’t alone. Many find it easy to dismiss or blame it on hormones, but she shed light on the fact that brushing it off is harmful. Sharing with the world on live television that it isn’t something mothers control may have helped lift the veil and remove some of what truly makes admitting postpartum depression scary, while opening doors for support to walk through.

In her memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” she revealed that Neutrogena did not renew her sponsorship contract following the interview, invoking a morality clause. However, since her death, Neutrogena’s contract lapse has sparked backlash, and it has officially released a statement acknowledging that it abandoned her during her time of need. They shared their condolences and sympathy for her loved ones and may be making some changes in the near future.

After living the life she led, Panettiere finally wrote about the darkness that lurked in the limelight-filled life that the world saw on screen. She describes how her relationship with Klitschko was also unexpectedly a form of protection, keeping inappropriate behaviors at bay. Despite everything she went through, she didn’t want to cause anyone any undue harm after the fact.

From how Panettiere talked about what she experienced and her desire to keep her daughter from the same, the greatest way to remember her life is to continue her legacy of advocating for those who have no voice. She showed that advocacy can take many forms, and honoring her memory means carrying forward, showing compassion, understanding, and shedding light on difficult subjects.

In remembering her, we honor the courage it took to confront painful truths and the compassion she showed for every being without a voice.
