In daily devotional, a woman embraces her Bible.

Happy Friday! It’s time for your daily devotional. Many don’t realize how good God is or how far-reaching His goodness extends. The Bible is full of examples of God’s protection of Israel, and even in their sinfulness, God is committed to preserving His people. In today’s daily devotional, it’s time to walk in obedience to the God who directs you in the way you should go.

God Has Mercy

In  2 Kings, a lineup of evil kings from the northern kingdom of Israel is chronicled, and the list goes from bad to worse. In 13:1, Jehoahaz reigns, continuing the wickedness of his father Jehu and the evil kings before him. God’s anger is kindled, and He allows the king of Syria to oppress them. Then Johoahaz humbles himself. Verse 4 says, “Jehoahaz besought the Lord, and the Lord hearkened unto him: for he saw the oppression of Israel, because the king of Syria oppressed them.”

When Jooahaz prays, God has mercy and delivers Israel. God, in His omniscience, knows they’ll return to sin, but He rescues them because of His faithfulness. In your daily devotional, realize that it’s God’s goodness that blesses you even when you disobey Him.

Walk in Obedience

Because of their continued sinfulness, Israel reopened the door for Syria to oppress them throughout Jehoahaz’s reign. When Jehoahaz’s grandson, Joash, became king, he continued the legacy of evil. During his reign, Elisha became sick, and Joash went to visit him. Elisha instructed him to shoot arrows eastward out of a window to represent the Lord’s deliverance from Syria.

Elisha put his hands on Joash’s hands, declaring that Joash would smite the Syrians, destroying them. Elisha then instructed him to strike the arrows on the ground. Joash struck the arrows three times, giving little effort. At this, Elisha rebuked him for not exerting more fight. His striking the arrows represented the force with which he would defeat Syria.

Not discerning God’s mercy, he was limited to three victories. In this daily devotion, walk in obedience and in step with the Spirit so you’ll recognize the day of God’s visitation, when He will pour out His goodness on your behalf.

Covenant With Abraham

Because of Israel’s sinfulness, Syria oppressed them repeatedly. Yet the Lord continued to watch over them. Verse 23 says, “And the Lord was gracious unto them, and had compassion on them, and had respect unto them, because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not destroy them.” It’s God’s goodness that continues to preserve Israel and His faithfulness to the covenant He made with Abraham.

As he warred, Joash recovered the cities that Syria had captured and was victorious three times, according to the word of Elisha. In today’s daily devotional, listen intently to the people God has placed in your life, as they can be mouthpieces for God’s goodness.

God Proves His Goodness

According to 1 Kings 16:33, Joash’s great-grandfather, Ahab, “did more to provoke the Lord God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel that were before him.” However, when God pronounced judgment on Ahab, he showed humility, and God proved merciful. In 1 Kings 21:29, God told Elisha, “Because he humbleth himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his days.”  In your daily devotional, God proves His goodness time and again without fail.
