Daily Devotional Thursday Thoughts | April 30, 2026

In this daily devotional, a lady reads the Bible on her lap.

It’s Thursday, and time for your daily devotional. The scribes and Pharisees weren’t winning any popularity points with Jesus as He continued to expose their hypocrisy and wickedness. His goal wasn’t to pat their wrists but to warn the sheep that there were wolves loose, ready to devour the flock. In today’s daily devotional, Jesus desires repentance from wrongdoing.

Woe Unto You

Jesus delivers His second woe to the scribes and Pharisees in Matthew 23:14: “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.” Although they held positions of authority and were called Rabbis, Jesus calls them deceivers. In the temple, they taught God’s word and lead prayers. However, instead of caring for the widows, they were taking advantage of them. In your daily devotional, pray for your leaders to not fall into the trappings of hypocrisy.

Pure and Undefiled Religion

James 1:27 says pure, undefiled religion involves caring for “widows in their affliction.” And 1 Timothy 5:3 admonishes honoring those who are “widows indeed,” not having family support. When the first deacons were chosen in Acts 6, they distributed food to the widows. However, because the scribes and Pharisees were self-serving, they were devouring widows’ houses, perhaps by gaining their affections or trust and becoming trustees of their properties.

It’s possible they convinced some widows to donate their estates to the temple and then profited from the contribution. Jesus cared for widows’ plight. When a poor widow put all she had into the temple’s offering, He spoke highly of her giving all she had. In this daly devotional, honor those whom Jesus says to honor. Don’t take advantage of those who should be supported.

Prayer is Communication

Prayer is communication with God. As a believer, you must remain in fellowship with God through prayer. As the True Vine, Jesus teaches you to stay connected to the Source of your spiritual life, as it produces growth, maturity, and fruit-bearing. The scribes and Pharisees were known for their long prayers, They wanted to impress others by appearing devout; however, Jesus warned His disciples early on not to follow their example. In Matthew 6:5, “And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men.”

The religious leaders deceived the people by not praying in truth and sincerity. In your daily devotional, approach prayer with an attitude of worship, humility, and faith, not with deceifulness. In Psalm 51:17, David prayed with a broken and contrite spirit, of which he says, “O God, thou wilt not despise.”

Greater Damnation

The scribes and Pharisees would receive “greater damnation” for their hypocrisy. A hypocrite’s true nature comes out eventually, given the right circumstances. Jesus was the stone they stumbled over, causing them to be fully exposed. They’d duped the people, they couldn’t dupe God, for He knows the thoughts and intents of the heart. The scribes and Pharisees took great pride in their works and in being sons of Abraham, yet they faced eternal damnation. In this daily devotional, examine yourself. Know that you are walking righteously before God and not pretentiously.

The Righteous will be Rewarded

In Thursday’s daily devotional, the religious elite were unmoved by John the Baptist’s prior message of repentance, and they weren’t swayed by Jesus’ teaching on salvation. There would remain no more sacrifice for their sins. In today’s daily devotional, punishment awaits the unrighteous unless they repent, but the righteous will be rewarded.
