Happy Friday! It’s time for your Friday morning daily devotional. Proverbs 31 is an inspirational chapter for women. It shows that a woman’s godly character is near to God’s heart. Otherwise, He wouldn’t have dedicated such a sizable passage to describing it. In today’s daily devotional, God’s Word inspires even the barren woman to rejoice.
Ability to Bear
Hannah and Elizabeth were two women who were counted out. Both were barren yet desired children. Although Hannah lived ten centuries before Elizabeth, both were in societies where bearing children was culturally expected. A woman’s worth was often determined by her ability to bear, and barrenness was seen as a sign of God’s disfavor or judgment. A woman could be socially ostracized and made to feel shame and disgrace. In your daily devotional, God can step into the most barren areas of your life and bring faith, hope, and miracles.
Desire in Her Heart
Hannah was a virtuous woman who loved and trusted God. Her barrenness had devastated her, not only because her counterpart had children, but because God had placed the desire in her heart. Hannah’s husband, Elkanah, loved her more than ten sons could; however, she was dissatisfied. Elkanah’s fertile second wife bore many offspring, and she tormented Hannah because of her childlessness.
Elkanah’s household went to Jerusalem yearly. But this joyous occasion was misery to Hannah. She became emotional and wept rather than eat. In this daily devotional, even in your darkest hour, say to yourself, “God is my very present help.” Trust God and give it to Him in prayer.
Grant Her Request

Hannah went to the temple and prayed, vowing that if God would give her a son, she would dedicate his life to Him. When Eli, the priest, saw Hannah, making no sound with trembling lips, he accused her of drunkenness. Hannah confessed her sorrow; then Eli prayed a blessing over her and asked God to grant her request. Hannah’s faith soared, and she believed the priest’s blessing would change her life.
Then Hannah became pregnant and bore Samuel, God’s mighty judge and prophet who anointed Israel’s first two kings. She dedicated him to the Lord, and had other sons and daughters. Hannah sought no one but God in her troubles because she trusted Israel’s covenant God. In your daily devotional, when you trust in the God of your salvation, you have an unlimited supply, for God can meet every need.
Elizabeth Rejoiced
Another virtuous woman, Elizabeth, had been barren for many years and was now old. At this point, all hope was gone. However, Gabriel visited her husband, Zacharias, and told him Elizabeth would bear a son. Shocked, Zacharias questioned, and Gabriel struck him dumb for his unbelief. God’s word came to pass without Zacharias’ interference, and Elizabeth rejoiced. God made her fertile in her old age. Luke 37 confirms that “with God nothing shall be impossible.” In this daily devotional, when you desire something of the Lord, you must believe and receive it by faith.
You Have Faith in God
In Friday’s daily devotional, when her cousin, Mary, visited her, Elizabeth spoke prophetically: “Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. And whence is this to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” She told Mary that “there shall be a performance of those things,” Gabriel told her. Hannah and Elizabeth rejoiced after giving birth in God’s timing. In today’s daily devotional, as a virtuous woman, have faith in God, for He makes the barren woman “a joyful mother of children.”
