It’s time for your Tuesday morning daily devotional. John 11 reveals Jesus’closeness to Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. Verse 2 identifies Mary as the one who anointed the Lord’s feet and wiped them with her hair. Jesus loved her and esteemed her for what this act represented. In today’s daily devotional, your love for Jesus, not people’s opinions, determines your relationship with the Master.

Expecting Jesus’ Arrival

In verse 1, Bethany is mentioned as the home of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. Their home is familiar to Jesus, as He’d fellowship with them there. The sisters have sent Jesus a message that Lazarus is sick. They didn’t specifically ask Him to come, but because of their close friendship, they’re expecting His arrival. They’ve seen Him heal so many others. They’re confident He will get there soon. In your daily devotional, you may ask the Lord for what you desire, but be prepared if you don’t get the answer you seek.

Work to Do

Verse 5 points out Jesus’ love for them. However, verse 6 says, “When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.” Obviously, his sisters deemed Lazarus’ sickness serious enough to tell Jesus; however, Jesus waits. Two days pass before He says to His disciples, “Let us go into Judea again.”

They’re stunned because the last time they were there, the Pharisees tried to stone Jesus. Even though Jesus had passed through their midst unharmed, the disciples didn’t want to risk another encounter. Yet Jesus knows that He still has work to do in His Father’s allotted time. In this daily devotional, God gives you time to do the work He has given you. Like Jesus, do it courageously.

That You May Believe

In verse 14, Jesus tells His disciples that Lazarus is dead. Then He states, “And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.” Jesus uses this occasion to elevate their faith. Yet Thomas thinks they will all go and bravely die with Jesus. When they arrive, they see that Lazarus has been in the grave for four days.

The sisters are at home grieving when Martha hears that Jesus has arrived. Right away, she makes her way to Him, saying, “Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.” In your daily devotional, know that Jesus can perform great miracles. He isn’t limited to man’s timing or faithlessness.

He Calls Lazarus

Jesus tells Martha, “I am the resurrection and the life.” She answers by stating her belief that He is the Son of God. Then she goes to get Mary, who greets Jesus in the same manner as Martha. When He sees sorrow and disbelief on everyone’s face, He weeps that they still don’t have faith despite all they’ve seen and heard.

He asks where Lazarus is buried, and after arriving, He prays. Then He calls Lazarus loudly. To everyone’s amazement, Lazarus comes out of the grave, foreshadowing Jesus’ resurrection. In this daily devotional, sometimes life brings sadness; even the earth went dark for six hours after Jesus’ death. But joy and gladness await when you trust in God.

Let Jesus Raise You Up

In Tuesday’s daily devotional, Jesus’ words in verse 44 are “Loose him, and let him go.” Jesus delivers you from the hand of the enemy who wants to bind you, making it seem there’s no way out. In today’s daily devotional, let Jesus raise you up by having faith despite what others may say.
