Black Bear has acquired domestic rights to Honeymoon / Funeral, a romantic comedy starring Rebecca Ferguson, Greta Lee and Carrie Coon, from MRC. The deal was announced Friday after the film was shopped at the Toronto International Film Festival’s newly created film market.
The deal brings together three in-demand actresses under a script that mixes grief and romance over the course of a single week. MRC financed and oversaw the film‘s production, while FilmNation Entertainment is handling worldwide sales.
The Details Of The Black Bear Honeymoon Funeral Acquisition
Honeymoon / Funeral follows two women who meet on a flight from Los Angeles to London. One is traveling to her honeymoon alone after being left at the altar by her girlfriend. The other is heading home for her mother’s funeral. The pair end up spending the week together, according to Deadline.
Nahnatchka Khan, a two-time Emmy nominee known for Always Be My Maybe and Totally Killer, directs from a screenplay by Julia Bicknell. Khan and Jennifer Carreras produced the film under their Fierce Baby banner, with Bicknell also serving as a producer.
Katie Anderson, Black Bear’s EVP of Acquisitions, called the project “an original and hilarious story that is deeply human, anchored by the performances of Rebecca, Greta, and Carrie, three of the best actresses working today,” according to Deadline. Anderson added, “We can’t wait to partner with our friends at MRC and FilmNation to share this world that Nahnatchka and Julia have created with audiences.”
What It Means For Fans
The acquisition means audiences in North America will get a dedicated distributor behind a film pairing Ferguson, Lee and Coon in a story built around two very different reasons for travel converging into one shared journey. Production on Honeymoon / Funeral wrapped in September 2026, and the film is currently in post-production, according to Variety.
No release date has been set, and Black Bear has not detailed pricing, theatrical windows or marketing plans for the film. Fans of the three leads will need to watch for further word from Black Bear as post-production continues.
Background On The Creative Team
Khan has directing credits that include Always Be My Maybe and Totally Killer, according to Variety and IndieWire. Her work on Honeymoon / Funeral marks another entry in a filmography built around comedy with emotional stakes.
The film emerged from TIFF’s newly created film market, a venue designed for exactly this kind of deal, where distributors scout finished or near-finished projects for acquisition rather than relying solely on festival premieres to generate buyer interest.
What’s Next
Honeymoon / Funeral remains in post-production with no announced release date. FilmNation Entertainment continues to handle sales outside North America, while Black Bear now controls the film’s path to domestic audiences. Further details on timing and rollout are expected as post-production wraps.
