“House of the Dragon” Season 2 Episode 7 is called “The Red Sowing,” and the major focus of this episode is Rhaenyra’s search for dragon riders. She has few allies, and even fewer foot soldiers. However, she does have a good number of dragons; she just needs to find people to ride them. This theme starts in the first scene in this episode.

The first scene of this episode is Hugh bumbling around the dragonpit, with a torch. The second scene of “House of the Dragon” Season 2 Episode 7 shows Rhaenyra coming face to face with Addam and Seasmoke on a beach. He wants to become a dragon rider, he tells her. He falls to his knees and pledges his fealty to her. They both eventually come to an agreement and fly back to Dragonstone. Do you think Rhaenyra will be able to find enough dragon riders?

This episode is almost entirely about Rhaenyra and her search for dragon riders. There is a diversion to Daemon, his quest for alliances, and his strange dreams. There is also a diversion to King Aemon, who walks for the first time. However, the search for dragon riders is the main focus of the episode.

The Search for Dragon Riders

The Small Council is not happy with the search for dragon riders. Mysaria wants Rhaenyra to embrace the new order of things, and is bullish about finding more riders among the people. Rhaenyra says, “Well then, let us raise an army of bastards.”

A Diversion to Daemon

Meanwhile, Daemon speaks to Lord Oscar Tully, and he pledges his fealty to Queen Rhaenyra and her consort. Interestingly, he is so young, just a boy. The problem is, Tully’s men and those in the Riverlands hate Daemon. He worries that this could cause an insurrection if it is not handled correctly. Daemon shrugs these concerns off, believing he just needs their swords, not their love.

Daemon goes out of Harrenhal to meet the Riverlords and Brackens. Though they unite behind Daemon and Rhaenyra, there is still obvious tension. As Oscar, he bids Willem Blackwood to pay for his crimes, and Daemon executes him. There is harsh justice in “House of the Dragon.” It is ironic that with his burns and disfigurement, he looks like King Viserys, who just appeared to Daemon in a dream. This is one of the ironies in “House of the Dragon.”

Another Diversion: Aegon Walks

Aegon tries to walk and falters. Lord Larys tells him his progess has been impressive, but he needs to work harder. He says his strength will return and they will make adjustments to the gait. He should know. Lord Larys tells the Grand Maester that he pushes Aegon too hard and must be more careful.

More About the Quest for Dragon Riders

Jace is not happy about commoners riding dragons. After all, when Rhaenyra passes away, Jace believes the crown will be contested by all these new people. Given that there is nothing separating him from the other half-born children, and his father is Harwin Strong. He calls the new riders, the commoners, “mongrels.” There is a great deal of animosity between the royals and the commoners in “House of the Dragon.”

In one of the most dramatic scenes of “House of the Dragon,” all the potential matches show up at Dragonstone. This includes Hugh, a commoner who claims he has royal blood. It seems in “House of the Dragon” There are Targaryens everywhere. Mysaria says that she used to work in a pleasure house and there are four score of them running around the city.

Rhaenyra addresses all the men and women who have come and think they might be dragon riders in the chamber, though, pointing out that this is a big move and it could lead to their death. She tells them their purpose is to end the hardships of starvation, privation, and war. That said, everyone wants to claim a dragon. Doing so will end the hardships they are undergoing in “House of the Dragon.”

Vermithor is the largest dragon, she tells them, in the world after Vhagar and certainly the fiercest. They are to go to him now and figure out who is worthy to take him on. The dragon is huge, and in the depths of the chamber, after speaking High Valyrian, the men and women are left to their fate as Rhaenyra tells them she has nothing more to tell them, and it must be the dragon who speaks. He does; numerous die, with flames erupting through the chamber. Rhaenyra seems entranced by the flames, bringing back that ol’ Targaryen madness, as she watches from above.

Final Analysis: Claiming a Dragon

The prospective dragon riders are represented by a man who speaks Old Valyrian to Rhaenyra. Claiming a dragon is a high-stakes game. If the dragon does not like them, it will burn them. If they are successful in their quest to claim a dragon, they are a dragon rider and must serve the crown. Rhaenyra tells the prospects that if they are successful, they will win the war. It is a little odd that she left them.
