Adam DiMarco is set to star in “Dark Ocean,” the first feature film from Icelandic television and film production company Glassriver, The Hollywood Reporter reported Oct. 22.
DiMarco will play Hákon, a 28-year-old Canadian-born Icelander at the center of the drama. The project is Glassriver’s feature debut, which gives the casting added weight for a company best known for TV series such as “Black Sands” and “Cold Haven.”
The role and story details
“Dark Ocean” follows Hákon, who signs on with a North Atlantic fishing trawler for his first long stretch at sea. He needs the money. His girlfriend is pregnant with their first child.
The trawler turns out to be a much rougher place than Hákon bargained for. Struggling with both the unforgiving ocean and the unforgiving crew, he has to learn the rules of a brutal world that runs on its own terms. As the danger mounts, the film digs into what survival costs a young man in an isolated, hyper-masculine culture where grief goes unspoken.
Director and producer Baldvin Z explained why DiMarco fit the part.
“I’ve been looking for Hákon for a long time. He needed to be someone who could walk into this brutal world of men as an outsider and allow us to experience it through his eyes,” Baldvin Z said. “Adam has a vulnerability and warmth that immediately drew me to him, but there’s also something unpredictable underneath — a quiet strength that feels completely right for Hákon. At its heart, ‘Dark Ocean’ is about belonging, and about the systems that shape young men into the men they become.”
The project so far
Baltasar Kormákur, the director of “Everest,” steps back in front of the camera to co-star as Captain Andri, with Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Höddi. Þorsteinn Bachmann and Thorvaldur Kristjansson were announced earlier, and more cast members are expected to be revealed in the coming weeks. Matthías Tryggvi Haraldsson wrote the screenplay.
Baldvin Z is producing alongside Guðgeir “Gucci” Arngrímsson for Glassriver and Christine Haebler for Canada’s Terminal City Pictures, making the film an Iceland-Canada co-production. Haebler weighed in on the collaboration in a statement.
“Projects like ‘Dark Ocean’ don’t come along very often,” Haebler said. “It’s an honour to be working with this exceptional cast and the talented Glassriver team.”
DiMarco’s recent work
DiMarco broke out in the second season of HBO‘s “The White Lotus.” He has since starred in “Overcompensating” and Netflix’s horror series “Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen.” His casting as Hákon puts him at the center of Glassriver’s first move from television into feature filmmaking.
What’s next
“Dark Ocean” is set to begin shooting in early 2027 in Iceland and Canada, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Rocket Science is handling worldwide sales and launched the project at the Cannes Film Festival market in May, and composer Anne Nikitin (“The Dropout”) is attached to score. No release date or budget has been announced.
