Lava on the streets of Los Angeles and Athena Grant trapped somewhere underground: that is the setup in the “9-1-1” season 10 trailer, which ABC released Thursday, Oct. 1. The milestone season premieres Thursday, Oct. 15, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

The premiere episode is titled “That Sinking Feeling,” and ABC’s logline promises an “earth-shattering emergency” that shakes the city, according to TV Insider.

Inside the 9-1-1 season 10 trailer

The footage shows Athena (Angela Bassett) in a collapsed space, apparently after crawling into a hole in the ground, while her daughter May (Corinne Massiah) tries and fails to reach her from the hospital. The 118 heads out to find her.

In the 9-1-1 season 10 trailer, dispatcher Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) points out that Los Angeles has no protocol for a volcano. The firefighters handle it with the show’s usual gallows humor. Hen (Aisha Hinds) tells the crew to “try not to get Pompeii’d,” and Chimney (Kenneth Choi) asks if anyone has played “the floor is lava,” TV Insider noted. Other shots in the 9-1-1 season 10 trailer include Eddie (Ryan Guzman) rescuing a dog and the team jumping between cars to stay off the ground.

Minear: A sinkhole first, then a volcano

Showrunner Tim Minear told TVLine that the season opens with a giant sinkhole that “turns into, of course, a volcano.” He joked that a real sinkhole opened on Sunset Boulevard while the team was preparing the episode. “It’s not my fault!” he said.

Minear also told TV Insider the writers grounded the eruption in “very hard science,” with a cone that builds as the lava flows, before adding that it is “a little bit like” a volcano bursting out of the ground in the middle of L.A.

Beyond what the 9-1-1 season 10 trailer shows, he summed up the season for TVLine in one line: “Volcanoes, sinkholes, fatherhood, love, death, humor, laughter, and lots and lots of food.”

Where season 9 left the 118

The 9-1-1 season 10 trailer picks up after a finale that moved several characters into new roles. According to TVLine’s recap:

  • Athena is now a detective after years as a patrol sergeant.
  • Buck (Oliver Stark) signed papers to become legal guardian of Theo, the boy conceived with his sperm donation to friends Connor and Kameron, after the couple died in a car crash.
  • Hen was diagnosed with dermatomyositis, an autoimmune disorder, lost her job for a time and was later reinstated.
  • Maddie replaced Sue as dispatch supervisor, and Chimney is still captain of the 118.
  • May is pursuing nursing, and Harry (Elijah M. Cooper) is in his second year as a firefighter.
  • Eddie lost his abuela and was stabbed in the finale by the crime family that went after Athena.

“It’s the same show, but hopefully not a hamster wheel of a show,” Minear told TVLine. Gavin McHugh also returns as Eddie’s son, Christopher.

ABC’s Thursday lineup

The episode teased in the 9-1-1 season 10 trailer leads off a three-show night. The season 2 premiere of “9-1-1: Nashville” follows, then the season 23 premiere of “Grey’s Anatomy,” per TVLine. Fans of the medical drama can also catch up on the planned “Grey’s Anatomy” spinoff.
