Worlds 2026 Invictus Gaming Preview: Rookie Returns to the Main Stage After a Seven Year Drought

The countdown to Worlds 2026 has begun. To start the hype for the international event, we are looking at every team in the tournament. Invictus Gaming has qualified for Worlds for the second year in a row. However, it is the first time since 2019 that they will feature on the main stage. They lost to T1 in the Play-In. Rookie has also not participated in the Main Stage since 2019. Will they surprise everyone and chase the trophy?

Invictus Gaming’s Roster

  • Kang “TheShy” Seung-lok – Korean Top Laner
  • Yan “Wei” Yangwei – Chinese Jungler
  • Song “Rookie” Eui-jin – Korean Mid Laner
  • Zi “JiaQi” Jiaqi – Chinese Bot Laner
  • Tian “Meiko” Ye – Chinese Support

They have had different players in almost every role in 2026. The only constant is Wei. TheShy ended his retirement for the second year in a row to join the roster. He helped them climb out of Group Nirvana all the way to the Worlds Stage.

Regular Season Struggles to Worlds Qualification

The numerous roster changes did not help IG in the LPL. They finished 9th-12th in Split 2. They played the Split 3 regular season in Group Nirvana. They finished second in the group. They rematched Thundertalk Gaming, whom they lost to in the previous Knight’s Rivals. They won 3-0 to advance to the Bracket Stage. There, they went on a Lower Bracket run to the Lower Bracket Final. Only Anyone’s Legend stopped them.

Top Esports denied them the third seed, but they defeated JD Gaming in the decider. That victory qualified IG for the Worlds Main Stage for the first time since 2019. The organization fell from grace after winning Worlds in 2018 and losing to eventual champions FPX in the 2019 semi-finals. They appeared at Worlds last year, but they had to get through T1. As for all LPL teams, beating T1 in a best-of-five series proved impossible.

Going into Split 3, no one expected them to qualify for Worlds again. Even with TheShy back, the mountain appeared too high to climb. They climbed that mountain. However, that pales in comparison to their upcoming mountain.

Finally at Main Stage

When they qualified for Worlds last year, Rookie was a passenger. GALA was the primary reason for the qualification. However, without the famed AD Carry, someone needed to step up. Rookie stepped up during the playoffs. It was his best domestic performance. Rookie will need to perform. The mid lane pool is stacked. In the LCK and LPL teams alone, Rookie must compete with Chovy, Zeka, Faker, ShowMaker, Shanks, Knight, and Creme.

The Western mid laners are not walkovers either. If Rookie drops off again, IG may see their international run end early. Rookie has plenty of pressure on his shoulders. He returns to the main stage for the first time since 2019. In his previous two main stage appearances, Rookie won in 2018 and finished 3rd-4th in 2019.

Invictus Gaming Expectations

IG has three experienced players: TheShy, Rookie, and Meiko. All three have lifted the Summoner’s Cup before. They know what it takes to win. The Swiss Stage is stacked this year. They could miss the Bracket Stage. A weak performance or bad draw could eliminate them. No one should expect them to lift the trophy. However, they are a dark horse.

Swiss Stage Beginnings

As the LPL fourth seed, they are in Pool 4 for the Swiss Stage. They will face a Pool 1 team in Round 1.

Potential Opponents

They could face Gen.G Esports, G2 Esports, or the LCS first seed. Anyone’s Legend is not a potential opponent, as there are no regional matchups in Round 1.
