Wing Commander 3 FMV restoration

EA has announced a 30th anniversary edition of Wing Commander 3: Heart of the Tiger, rebuilding the game’s signature full-motion video sequences from recovered original tapes. The announcement came during a panel at Portland Retro Gaming Expo, according to Video Games Chronicle.

Wing Commander 3 first launched in 1994 and starred Mark Hamill in a story told through more than two hours of FMV sequences between missions. The game was marketed heavily at the time as an interactive movie, but that footage originally ran at 240p with heavy compression due to the technological limits of the era.

Wing Commander 3 30th Anniversary Edition Release Details

  • Announced at: Portland Retro Gaming Expo panel
  • Key feature: FMV sequences restored from original source tapes
  • Frame rate: boosted up to 60 frames per second
  • Includes: an enhancement patch built with the Wing Commander fan community
  • Includes: Kilrathi Saga integration

No release date, platforms or price have been announced for the project.

What We Know About The Restoration

EA producer Jim Vessella announced the 30th Anniversary Edition and said much of the original source video has been recovered and catalogued for restoration, according to VGC. Kotaku reported that Vessella located more than 600 source tapes in EA’s archives during the search.

The 30th Anniversary Edition will present those FMV sequences “in the highest quality possible,” per VGC, a notable jump from the original disc release. Wing Commander 4, the 1996 sequel, got a DVD-ROM re-release with sharply improved video quality, but Wing Commander 3 never received the same treatment until now.

The edition will also fold in Kilrathi Saga integration. The Kilrathi Saga was a 1996 compilation that packaged the first three Wing Commander games with four expansion packs. It remains unclear from EA’s announcement whether that means the first two games are getting their own restoration work or whether the new Wing Commander 3 edition will simply be playable inside the Kilrathi Saga package.

Why It Matters For Fans

Wing Commander 3 is widely regarded as the best entry in the series, and fans had long hoped for a proper remaster. Many worried the original FMV footage had been lost for good, given how long ago it was shot and how niche the format has become. Finding more than 600 tapes in EA’s archives answers that concern directly.

The planned enhancement patch, built with input from the Wing Commander fan community, suggests EA is leaning on longtime players who have spent years optimizing the game’s performance and features.

What’s Next

EA has not announced a release date, platform list or price for the Wing Commander 3 30th Anniversary Edition. The company also has not clarified the full scope of the Kilrathi Saga integration. Further details are expected to come from EA as restoration work continues on the recovered tapes.
