Colleen Hoover’s Verity box office performance dominated Thursday previews with $4.5 million, positioning the Amazon MGM thriller to open with $30 million to $35 million this weekend, according to Deadline and Variety. The Amazon MGM thriller, starring Dakota Johnson and Anne Hathaway, is on track to land at No. 1, which would mark Hathaway’s third No. 1 film after The Odyssey and The Devil Wears Prada 2.

Tom Cruise’s Digger earned $1.2 million in previews and is projected to open with $12 million to $15 million against a budget of $125 million to $160 million.

How Verity box office previews compare

Verity’s opening will extend the Hoover adaptation run at the box office. Dakota Johnson hosts SNL this month as well.

s $4.5 million preview figure positions it as arguably Hoover’s second-most successful book-to-screen adaptation after It Ends With Us. That 2024 film earned $7 million in previews and went on to rack up a $50 million opening and $350 million globally.

The new thriller outpaced the previews for Reminders of Him, which earned $1.9 million and opened with $17.9 million earlier this year. It should surpass Regretting You, which opened with $13.6 million last fall.

The $40 million production stars Johnson as Lowen Ashleigh, a ghostwriter hired to finish a manuscript for Hathaway’s reclusive author Verity Crawford. Josh Hartnett plays Verity’s husband. The film is based on Hoover’s best-selling novel.

Digger’s rough preview showing

Digger’s $1.2 million preview total trails last fall’s One Battle After Another, which earned $3.1 million in previews and opened with $22 million.

Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, Digger stars Cruise as a wealthy industrialist attempting to prevent an environmental crisis. Critics have largely panned the film. Cruise and the filmmakers have responded to the negative reception by encouraging audiences to judge the movie themselves.

What’s next

Final weekend estimates arrive Sunday night. Verity’s opening will extend the Hoover adaptation run at the box office.
