Most of The Fairly Oddparents had protagonist Timmy make many wishes of questionable wisdom and unfortunate results. These include everything from wishing away technology to wishing all the girls out of Dimmsdale. One of his most dangerous wishes comes from the Halloween special, Scary Godparents. In this episode, Timmy turns everyone into their costumes by wishing they were all “Real and Scary.” The only one unaffected is Vicky, for what should be pretty obvious reasons.
Scary Godparents: The Costume Conundrum
At the start of the episode, Timmy wants to be one of Crash Nebula’s Jack-O-Bots for Halloween. He attempts to wish himself a costume, but it fails because all the costumes are already owned. It was revealed that Trixie, Veronica, Tad, and Chad won them in a contest through bribery. Timmy’s parents are so impressed that they give them candy, Timmy’s games, CDs, and birthday money. Worse, Vicky is chaperoning Timmy and his friends’ trick-or-treating adventures. She makes him wear a terrible mummy costume and makes them give her 70% of their candy.
Real and Scary Costumes
After multiple failures to acquire candy from the neighbors, Timmy realizes their costumes are the issue. They aren’t realistic like the popular crowd or scary like Vicky. Timmy wishes that everyone’s costumes were real and scary to solve the issue. This resulted in everyone turning into the costumes they were wearing. Timmy becomes an actual mummy, while the popular kids become the Jack-O-Bots.
While this is happening, an alien ship is hovering above the planet. The Yugopotamian king and queen are spying on them and think Earth is plotting against them. With the Jack-O-Bots trying to destroy Earth, not being able to undo the wish is problematic. Timmy’s mummy body has since fallen apart, and Wanda brings Timmy’s head to the Costume Emporium. He emerges from it as a hybrid of many different costumes. The scary godchild of scary godparents, indeed.
Piñata of Mass Destruction
By this point, the Jack-O-Bots have merged into the Pumpkinator. After a brief skirmish, the Pumpkinator pins Timmy to the ground and starts its’ countdown to self-destruct. One of the kids is dressed as the tooth fairy, and Wanda uses this to fix things. During the fight, Timmy loses a tooth, so she puts Cosmo’s pillow on top. This summons Wendell Bender, who went as the tooth fairy. Wanda grabs his wand, changing her back and allowing Timmy to wish the costumes back to normal.
To solve the Yugopotamian issue, Timmy tricks them into thinking Earth is declaring war. The Yugopotamians launch a bomb before going home to their planet. But, since they think anything terrible is good and vice versa, the bomb is a candy-filled Piñata. Candy rains down on Dimmsdale, and all the kids get some while Vicky is crushed by candy.
Final Thoughts
For such a laughable premise, Scary Godparents came close to destroying the world over costumes. Yet, it still is one of the most creative uses of fairy magic. This storyline epitomizes the phrase, Be careful what you wish for. It also does the angle of ‘wishing away the problem’ interestingly. Scary Godparents is a fun episode that showcases.
