More than 4.3 million tubes of toothpaste have been recalled nationwide, including several children’s products, after the Food and Drug Administration classified the recall as a Class II action on Oct. 19. The recall covers 17 toothpaste products made by India-based Pritam International Private Limited, according to USA Today.

The company initiated the recall on Sept. 10. It spans three brands, from kids’ character toothpaste to adult whitening and gum-health formulas. The FDA cited deviations from current good manufacturing practices as the reason for the recall but did not say what those deviations were.

Brands and products covered by the toothpaste recall

The recall touches three brands, Brush Buddies, Evo and Aru, across 17 products. Brush Buddies kids’ toothpaste makes up a large share of the affected inventory. The recalled varieties include Barbie-, Hot Wheels-, Crayola Silly Scents- and My Little Pony-themed tubes. Flavored options among the recalled Brush Buddies products include vanilla ice cream, chocolate ice cream, cookies ’n cream and mint chocolate chip. Several Brush Buddies whitening and cavity-protection formulas are also included.

On the adult side, two Evo products marketed for teeth whitening and sensitivity are part of the recall. Two Aru toothpastes marketed for gum health and cavity protection also made the list: Aru Toothpaste, Gum Health, 9 Ingredients, Soothing Mint, and Aru Toothpaste, Cavity Protection, 9 Ingredients, Cool Mint.

Why the recall matters and what the classification means

The FDA labeled this a Class II recall. The agency uses that designation when a product may cause temporary or medically reversible health problems, or when the chance of serious harm is remote. The agency tied the action to manufacturing-practice deviations but has not disclosed the specific defect or contamination issue behind it. No illnesses or injuries tied to the recalled toothpaste have been reported.

Pritam International initiated the recall voluntarily, meaning the company pulled the products on its own rather than under an FDA order. That’s a common path for Class II actions. Only specific lots are affected, so not every tube from these brands is part of the recall.

Background on the recall timeline

Pritam began the recall Sept. 10, and the FDA’s classification landed Oct. 19, 39 days later. Companies often start pulling products before federal regulators formally categorize a recall’s severity, and that’s what happened here. Ashtel Studios Inc., based in Ontario, California, distributed the toothpaste in the U.S., according to Quartz.

What consumers should do next

Consumers who have Brush Buddies, Evo or Aru toothpaste at home can check the FDA Enforcement Report for the affected lot numbers and expiration dates. The agency’s recall listings are the most reliable way to confirm whether a particular tube matches the affected batches.

The FDA didn’t issue a press release or specific consumer instructions for this recall, so the enforcement report listing is the best place to check for updates. Parents checking children’s toothpaste supplies should pay particular attention, given how many Brush Buddies kids’ varieties are involved.
