Spider-Man is a character who is no stranger to having an abundance of stories. When a comic character has been around since 1962, it’s no wonder he has thousands of published comics. That number doesn’t even count events and crossovers where he appears, briefly or not. This is a continuation of a previous article. The goal here is to name some great Spider-Man writers, who weren’t in that first article. Let’s get into it.
Peter David
Peter David is an incredibly underrated Spider-Man author. Many of his most famous works were funny enough in spin-off books, separate from the main title of The Amazing Spider-Man. His most notable story is the Death of Jean DeWolff. This story took place in Peter Parker the Spectacular Spider-Man issues 107-110. This comic is notable for tons of reasons. Firstly, it was incredibly mature and gruesome for its time. The story centers around Jean DeWolff and the aftermath of her death.
This titular character was an ally and police confidante (and a potential love interest) for Spider-Man. The story that follows is a dark, graphic one that tackles themes of morality and justice. It also establishes Daredevil as being a strong friend to Spider-Man. Another great Peter David story is the one-off “When Cometh.. The Commuter!”. It’s a goofy side story about Spider-Man going to suburbia. It takes place in Amazing Spider-Man #267. It’s a low-stakes, but really fun and charming issue. Peter David knew how to write dark stories, but also light-hearted, goofy tales as well.
David Michelinie
David Michelinie is a juggernaut of Spider-Man stories. He primarily wrote in the 1980s and 90s, particularly when Peter Parker was married to Mary Jane Watson. He was the main writer for this era, and the fanbase adores him. He has written so many incredibly integral stories to the web that this character has (pun fully intended). Some of the most notable David Michelinie stories revolve around the black costume saga or alien symbiote saga. Many fans forget this, but Spider-Man only had the symbiote suit for only a handful of issues.
In real-time, it was probably for barely even a year. It’s a bit he-said, she-said, but apparently, fans at the time hated the black suit. Then, Marvel brought back the red and blue, and then fans kind of missed the black costume. Black Cat, Spider-Man’s girlfriend at the time, loved the suit and made him a cloth version of it. Michelinie forever changed Spidey by introducing characters like Venom and Carnage, two villains that have exploded in popularity since. He’s a pillar of the Spider-Man writing community.
Gerry Conway
Last but not least for this list, there’s Gerry Conway. Gerry Conway is a super old-school Spider-Man writer. Conway took over the title at the young age of 19, writing directly after the legendary Stan “the Man” Lee. Needless to say, Conway had some insane shoes to fill. Yes, the actual argument of whether Stan Lee wrote those stories is always debated. Either way, the characters, plot lines, and drama introduced in those legendary first 100 or so issues of Amazing Spider-Man resonated with so many readers. Conway certainly had a lot of pressure on him.
But he performed excellently. This was a wonderful era for Spider-Man. Well, it was, until issue 121, “The Night Gwen Stacy Died”. This was a turning point for the character. Peter Parker lost his uncle because he was selfish, and that made him Spider-Man. Spider-Man’s greatest failure is losing his girlfriend, Gwen Stacy at the hands of Green Goblin. This issue still ripples throughout the character’s current comics. Conway filled his shoes, and then some. Becoming one of the all-time greats in the Hall of Fame of Spider-Man writers.
