On Wednesday, August 28th, Amazon Prime Video dropped the season three trailer for Critical Role’s animated show The Legend of Vox Machina. The show adapts a 115-episode Dungeons and Dragons campaign, amassing over 450 hours of story. There is plenty of content to parse through to fit the narrative into a short, episodic structure. Here’s everything you need to know going into season three of The Legend of Vox Machina.

The Story Behind Vox Machina

Vox Machina is a group consisting of seven unique characters. Vax’ildan (Liam O’Brien) and Vex’ahlia (Laura Bailey), more commonly known as Vax and Vex, are stubborn half-elf twins. Vax excels in stealth and throwing daggers while Vex prefers a bow and arrow. Keyleth (Marisha Ray), a timid and insecure half-elf, commands the force of nature through her druidic magic. Pike (Ashley Johnson) is a determined gnome cleric, wielding the divine power of the Everlight through her deadly mace.

Grog (Travis Willingham) may appear like just a dumb goliath, but he and his rage are a force to be reckoned with. Percy (Taliesin Jaffe) is a noble and intelligent human gunslinger. Finally, Scanlan (Sam Riegel) is a raunchy gnome bard, assisting his party through his musical prowess.

The Legend of Vox Machina tells of a rag-tag group of adventurers just trying to scrape together some coin, known by their group name Vox Machina. By some impossible turn of events, Vox Machina finds themselves at the forefront of a war with the Chroma Conclave, a terrifying group of five chromatic dragons. The party managed to kill Brimscythe (David Tennant), a blue dragon, in season one. Season two saw them take out an acidic black dragon, Umbrasyl (Matthew Mercer). Three remain, including Vorgual (Liam O’Brien), an icy white dragon, Raishan (Cree Summer), a diseased green dragon, and Thordak, a fiery red dragon and easily the most dangerous of them all.

The Plot of Season Three

Five days ago the season three trailer for The Legend of Vox Machina premiered on Amazon Prime Video‘s YouTube channel. The trailer takes on a much darker tone than adopted by previous seasons of the show. As the fight with Thordak and the Chroma Conclave begins to bear down on Vox Machina, things will take a more life-threatening turn. Season three of The Legend of Vox Machina will also see the party continuing their search for the Vestiges of Divergence, powerful magical items that will assist them in their fight against the Chroma Conclave.

The Legend of Vox Machina season three will likely see Keyleth struggle with her relationship with Vox Machina. In Dungeons and Dragons 5e, high-level druids begin to age more slowly with the “Timeless Body” ability. Keyleth is bound to outlive all of her companions, and the shot of her sobbing in front of a headstone for Vox Machina illustrates this struggle. The settings in the trailer are also indicative of the Nine Hells, indicating that we may see this arc from the original campaign make an appearance in season three. There is also a quick shot of Grog and Jarett carrying a casket, suggesting we may see a major character death this season.

Perhaps the biggest question of season three is that of Thordak’s voice actor. Previously, Thordak was voiced by the extremely talented Lance Reddick, known for his work on many popular franchises like Destiny, John Wick, and The WireHowever, Reddick tragically and suddenly passed away on March 17th, 2023. There has yet to be any word on who, if anyone, will be taking Reddick’s place as the voice of Thordak. Thordak has lines in the trailer, but per the comments on the video, fans are unsure if this is Lance Reddick, Matthew Mercer, or a new voice actor.

Romance and Release Dates

As hinted at in the trailer, fans will get to see two couples fully realized in season three. The first is Vax and Keyleth. Their feelings for each other were revealed and confirmed in the first two seasons of the show, but the trailer showed off their first kiss, cementing the two as an official couple. The trailer also teased the beginnings of a more concrete relationship between Vex and Percy, following their blossoming romance in season two.

Like previous seasons, season three of The Legend of Vox Machina will be released weekly in three-episode batches. Episodes one through three will premiere on Thursday, October 3rd. Episodes four through six will follow on October 10th. Seven through nine will be released on October 17th and the final three episodes, ten through twelve, will drop on October 24th. The show follows in the footsteps of Critical Role’s streamed campaigns, as they, too, have released weekly on Thursdays since their start in 2015. This created the popular saying among Critters or fans of Critical Role, “Is it Thursday yet?”

Final Thoughts

At its core, The Legend of Vox Machina is a love letter to Dungeons & Dragons, high-fantasy, and fans of both. Critical Role was faced with the huge undertaking of distilling hundreds of hours of streamed content into 22-minute episodes. The series has done well for itself, with both season one and season two earning 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. If season three keeps up the high stakes, impressive visuals, talented voice acting, and beloved immature comedy, it’s likely to be received just as well.
