We all collect things to a certain extent, whether it’s purposeful or by accident. From our quarters and stamps to the junk drawer in the kitchen, you can collect just about anything… including dust. But what about those odd collections? They’re the “collections” that make you want to throw up in your mouth a little or where shivers go down your spine. And, while I’m sure this topic could go down an entirely different rabbit hole, we are going to keep it PG, or maybe PG-13! Read if you dare, this list of Terrifying and Just Plain Weird Collections!
1. Backscratcher Collection
Manfred S Rothstein has collected 675 Backscratchers from 71 different countries since the 1970s. The collection can be found in his Dermatology Clinic in Fayetteville, NC. Gross! No, thank you! We wouldn’t want someone else’s dead skill cells on our shelves or floating in the air we breathe! Yuck, yuck, yuck!
2. Love Dolls Collection
Bob and Lizzie Gibbins are quite fond of collecting love dolls. Not only can the thought of a love doll be sad and maybe for some, a bit disturbing, but they are actually life-sized. This married couple likes to take the love dolls out in public, even when they go shopping. In total, the Gibbins have 240 love dolls in their home! To each their own. Let’s be honest, this isn’t the most bizarre thing we have seen or heard. Even the most macabre has formed a sense of belonging amongst today’s society. At least they aren’t backscratchers!
3. Airline Barf Bags Collection
As of February 2012, Niek Vermeulen of the Netherlands has acquired 6,290 airline sickness bags. From almost 200 different countries, he has visited 1,191 different airlines. His collection started in the ’70s, over 50 years ago. Again, to each their own. Not the most bizarre collection, but it is definitely odd to associate pleasant thoughts with a barf bag collection.
4. Nicotine Gumball
We may need Nieks’ barf bag collection, after all!
Barry was an addicted nicotine smoker who was going through a very rough time in his life. Smoking made his life so miserable that he decided to quit and started chewing nicotine gum. For some reason or another, he kept collecting that gum, forming a giant round clay-like sphere over the years. The ball of prechewed rubber contains over 95,200 pieces of gum. It currently sits at 175 pounds and took Barry over 6 years to finish. If you have to chew that many pieces of nicotine gum for 6 years, is it still affective?
5. Belly Button Lint Collection?!
Graham Barker, a librarian in Australia collects, of all things to collect, belly button lint. And as of 2010, Graham had collected around 22 grams of his own belly button lint and preserved it. For 26 years he would collect his belly button lint, every day. Before he showers, he checks his belly button for lint and puts it in a smaller jar to transfer into a larger jar, marked with the year it was collected.
Barker explained to The Daily Mail, that each piece of lint’s color and size depended on the towel he was using and the kind of clothes he was wearing that day. He finds he acquires more belly button lint when he wears thermal underwear. Think we can use those barfs bags now, Niek?
