Emergency Drive Away: 3 critical limits and costly risks

Emergency Drive Away lets Tesla drivers leave U.S. Superchargers while plugged in, with vehicle restrictions, software requirements and damage warnings.

Emergency Drive Away gives Tesla drivers an emergency exit from a Supercharger while the cable is still attached. Tesla announced the feature Oct. 1, warning that using it damages the vehicle and charging equipment.

Emergency Drive Away has 3 eligibility limits

The company lists three conditions: Vehicles need software version 2026.38.3, Model S and Model X vehicles built before 2021 are excluded, and the feature currently works only at U.S. Superchargers.

Tesla’s demonstration shows a car leaving the charging stall as the connector breaks away. The company says the override is reserved for emergencies and warns that deliberate misuse carries additional penalties.

The escape option comes with damage

According to Car and Driver, an on-screen warning offers activation when a driver attempts to shift into drive while connected. The driver holds the brake pedal and confirms the option on the display.

The report also cites Tesla’s estimate that repairs could reach $25,000, depending on the Supercharger. That is a potential cost, rather than a fixed charge for every incident.

The announcement makes no promise of a damage-free disconnect. Drivers should check their vehicle’s software and Tesla’s eligibility requirements rather than assume every model or charging location supports the feature.
