Beloved ‘That ’90s Show’ Axed by Netflix After Two Seasons

That '90s Show gets cancelled.

That ’90s Show, the successor to That ’70s Show starring Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher, will not be renewed for season 3. This news was confirmed by series star Kurtwood Smith on Instagram today. However, despite Netflix axing the series, the beloved grandpa figure gives fans small hope as he states that the comedy would be shopped around. Here are the latest updates about the show so far.

About That 90s Show

In That ’90s Show, 15 years have passed since its predecessor. It is now 1995 and Eric and Donna’s daughter, Leia Forman, played by Callie Caverda, visit her grandparents for the summer. There, she joins a new group of friends in Point Place. That ’90s Show followed the formula of Fuller House, bringing back the nostalgic multi-cam sitcom and picking up the story decades later with some of its original cast. That ’70s Show‘s Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp reprise their roles as the beloved grandparents, Red and Kitty Forman. Joining the main cast are Gwen (Ashley Aufderheide), Jay (Mace Coronel), Nate (Maxwell Acee Donovan), Ozzie (Reyn Doi), and Nikki (Sam Morelos).

Season 2 guest stars include Seth Green, Will Forte, Kevin Smith, and Matt Rife. In his Instagram post, Kurtwood Smith confirmed that That ’90s Show would not be renewed after two seasons. He thanked the fans for their dedication and the cast, writers, producers, and crew, the most wonderful people an actor could hope to work with. To steal Red Forman’s words, they’re not going to be dumb, giving fans little hope as the show would be shopped around, as they are good grandparents who would try to get the kids (young cast) to graduate high school. His heartfelt statement continues to trend worldwide, as streaming giant Netflix receives the boo from both fans and critics.

The News Gets Confirmed

News website Deadline confirmed that Netflix will not proceed with more of That ’90s Show. The cancellation comes only over a month after Part 3 of the sequel premiered on August 22. The series only had a two-season run, with Netflix releasing the multi-cam comedy in parts or half seasons after its initial run. Part 1 of That ’90s Show featured appearances from the original cast of That ’70s Show, featuring Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, and Wilmer Valderamma.

A season renewal with 16 episodes followed part 1, split into parts 2 and 3. Despite being nostalgic and popular, Part 2 only cracked the Netflix Top 10 once in its first full week of release, amassing 1.8 million views. The streaming giant went through with the premiere of Part 3, but the eight episodes didn’t chart. The cancellation of That ’90s Show shows Netflix’s struggle with original multi-camera comedies. Only its revival shows, Fuller House, The Ranch, and The Upshaws, reached a good span.

Final Thoughts

Many were not happy with the news of That ’90s Show’s cancellation. Despite the statistics, many fans found that Parts 2 and 3 were more playful and compelling, and the reviews support their claims. Some even stated that the show only found its legs, and the writing improved. Hence, Netflix canceling it at a time when the story was being built only magnified the dismay of viewers who followed the story.

More subscribers are considering canceling their subscriptions with Netflix axing works left and right. This news has caused the series to trend on social media and forums, and people are angry at the streaming giant for axing another beloved show. However, there is still hope that a company would pick up the series and continue where it left off, and that’s something every fan is praying for.
