Valve rolled out a Steam client beta update Thursday that overhauls how achievements work, introducing a new system called Achievement Sets that lets developers split DLC and seasonal achievements from a game’s base list.
Players can now compare progress directly with up to three friends at once, a feature PlayStation consoles have offered for years.
What Valve Announced With Achievement Sets
Developers can now create sets of achievements customized to their game, like mastering a specific character class or finishing a single-player campaign.
Sets distinguish base game achievements from separate DLC and seasonal sets. A seasonal example Valve uses is “Halloween Event Achievements,” which are valid for a certain period and don’t affect the achievement count of the base game.
What It Means For Fans Chasing 100% Completion
For completionists, the upside is direct. Under the old system, a player with 100% completion would see that mark drop when new DLC achievements were added. With Achievement Sets, base game completion stays at 100% even after DLC, as long as the developer builds it as a separate set.
Background And Current Availability
The system is still in beta. Not every game on Steam has implemented it yet; developers must actively build achievement sets for it to appear in their titles.
What’s Next
You can sign up for the Steam Client Beta to access the feature now, or wait for the wider rollout; betas typically last around a month.
