In daily devoton, the Bible is open to Genesis.

Happy Monday! It’s time for today’s daily devotion. When considering the great women of the Bible, Sarah is at the forefront. Sarah has the longest narrative of any woman in the Bible. In today’s daily devotion, Sarah’s life was one of honor and faithfulness to her husband and to God.

A Faithful Wife

In Genesis 11:29, when first mentioned, her name is Sarai, which is Hebrew for “princess.” She is Abraham’s wife, his half-sister, and they dwell in Ur of the Chaldees. In verse 31, they leave with Terah, Abraham’s father, journeying to Canaan. But they settled in Haran. After many years, Terah died, and Sarai continued traveling with Abraham to the territory of Canaan. Along the way, Sarai watches Abraham build an altar and worship God. Upon reaching Gerar, Abraham has Sarai tell the king that she’s his sister, not his wife.

Verse 31 says, “Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister: that it may be well with me for thy sake; and my soul shall live because of thee.” Sarah becomes a wall of security to Abraham at a time when he’s unsure of divine protection. In today’s daily devotion, sometimes life will put you in unexpected places, but trust God and keep moving forward in Him.

Royal Destiny

Sarai faithfully follows her husband, worships his God, and protects his well-being. Not opting for the comforts of a gentler life, she journeys with Abraham where the Lord leads. God promises Abraham a son; therefore, Sarah, being infertile, has hope. When she doesn’t get pregnant, she gives her maid Hagar to Abraham, and they have Ishmael. However, God changes Sarai’s name to Sarah, signaling royal destiny, for the promised seed would not only come through Abraham but through her.

Sarah’s strength is captured in her voice, her ability to speak up and ask for what she wants. 1 Peter 3:6 declares, “Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord”; however,  Abraham honors her also. She directed him to Hagar so that she could bear him a son, and then she directed him to send her away. God approved, and Abraham obeyed. In your daily devotion, your faithfulness and honor to God will be tested, but be determined to trust in His word and His leading.

Strength to Conceive

After years of barrenness, Sarah gives birth to Isaac, the son of promise, whose name means laughter, and he brings her the joy of motherhood. Hebrews 11:11 is a testament to Sarah’s faith:  “Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.” Sarah is listed among those who trusted God and received the promise. In your daily devotion, be one who is also counted among the faithful.

Matriarch of Israel

Sarah honored God faithfully and grew in righteousness. Once labeled barren, she became the matriarch of the tribes of Israel. Sarah teaches us to trust God’s timing and His faithfulness. Born in Ur, an idolatrous nation, without any knowledge of God, Sarah learned to put her faith in Him. Twice she uprooted her life, in Ur and in Haran, to follow God’s plan with Abraham. Sarah teaches us to honor God, family, and home.

Be a Woman of Faith

In Monday’s daily devotion, celebrate National Women’s History Month by honoring women who’ve been godly wives, mothers, and leaders. One such woman is Beverly Ann Cooper, who for years stood by her husband as he preached the gospel, and they brought forth a beautiful family. Her narrative, like Sarah’s, is filled with service. In your daily devotion, commit to serving God with honor and faithfulness.
