Daily Devotion Thoughtful Thursday | March 12, 2026

In dally devotion, a bible is open to Judges.

It’s a great Thursday, and time for your daily devotion. Before kings ruled, Israel had judges who presided over the land. In Judges 3, Ehud becomes judge and defeats Israel’s oppressor, and eighty years of peace follow, but once he dies, the people return to their evil ways. In today’s daily devotion, determine you’ll be steadfast, unmoving, and always abounding in the things of God.

Judge Deborah

In Chapter 4, Jabin, king of Canaan, and his army captain, Sisera, are a threat to Israel. Sisera and his 900 chariots stir fear. They’ve oppressed Israel for twenty years, and now Deborah, a prophetess, is Israel’s judge. This isn’t the normal order, as all Israel’s other judges are male.

She sits under a palm tree between two cities, and because of her wisdom, the Israelites come to her for judgment. In your daily devotion, there’s a saying that “When leaders lead, others will follow. In other words, true leadership isn’t based on gender or ethnicity; it’s based on God’s calling.

Deborah Goes to War

In verse 6, Deborah sends for Barak and then prophesies to Him: “Hath not the Lord God of Israel commanded, saying, Go and draw toward mount Tabor, and take with thee ten thousand men of the children of Naphtali and of the children of Zebulun?” She goes on to reveal that God will deliver Sisera into his hands.

Barak receives the prophecy under a condition. In verse 8, he says, “If thou wilt go with me, then I will go: but if thou wilt not go with me, then I will not go.” In this daily devotion, decide that you’ll unconditionally take God at His word, having faith in His direction.

Deborah’s Fearlessness

Barak believes Deborah’s word from the Lord, but wants her to go as security in battle. Therefore, Deborah tells him that a woman will defeat Sisera because of his faltering courage, not trusting God alone. Deborah has no fear accompanying Barak or of Sisera’s chariots because she knows God has already given Israel victory. Verse 9 says, “And Deborah arose, and went with Barak to Kedesh.”

Sisera declares war against Israel, and Barak answers the challenge, discomfiting Sisera’s army in battle. In today’s daily devotion, know that God always comes through, for the battle isn’t yours, it’s the Lord’s.

Israel Wins the Battle

Israel destroys Sisera’s entire army after he escapes on foot. He runs until he’s weary, then enters the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber, a descendant of Jethro, Moses’s father-in-law. Because there’s peace between Heber and King Jabin, Sisera feels safe there and falls asleep.

Then Jael drives a tent peg through his temples, fulfilling Deborah’s prophecy. In your daily devotion, note how God brings things full circle. Israel’s long history with Heber’s clan came through Moses’s wife, and Heber’s wife secures Israel’s victory by defeating Sisera.

Not only was Sisera and his entire army wiped out, but God also overthrew their kingdom: “And the hand of the children of Israel prospered, and prevailed against Jabin the king of Canaan, until they had destroyed Jabin king of Canaan.” Chapter 5 includes the Song of Deborah that Deborah and Barak sang that day, praising God for victory. In this daily devotion, say out loud, “I will sing of victory in the Lord.”

Awake to Righteousness

In Thursday’s daily devotion, one of the lines in the song is, “Awake, awake, Deborah: awake, awake, utter a song.” In your daily devotion, awake from lethargy or anything that may keep you from fulfilling God’s call for your life. Awake like Deborah to obedience and steadfastness in God.
