Update (10:45 a.m. ET, Oct. 9): Sacrifice arrives on Netflix on Oct. 16, 2026, according to CBR. The 100-minute film already premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, and it’s now headed straight to the streamer’s library for a global audience.

Director Romain Gavras leads the project, which pairs Taylor-Joy with Chris Evans in a story built around a volcanic cult and a desperate hostage situation.

What Happened: Sacrifice On Netflix Oct. 16

CBR confirmed that Sacrifice will officially debut on Netflix on Oct. 16, 2026, giving subscribers access to the full 100-minute film more than a year after its Toronto International Film Festival premiere. The movie had its first public screenings at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it picked up mixed-to-negative notices, reflected in a 37% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, according to CBR.

In Sacrifice, Anya Taylor-Joy plays Joan, the leader of a terrorist group convinced she is carrying out a divine mission. Chris Evans plays Mike Tyler, a film star chasing a Hollywood comeback who becomes Joan’s group’s prisoner. The plot centers on the group’s plan to sacrifice Tyler in a volcano, according to CBR.

What It Means For Fans

Streaming gives Sacrifice a much wider audience than its festival premiere offered, letting Netflix subscribers judge the film for themselves despite its rocky reception out of Toronto. The supporting cast adds plenty of star power around Taylor-Joy and Evans, with Salma Hayek, Vincent Cassel, Sam Richardson, John Malkovich and Charli XCX all featured in the film, according to CBR.

For Taylor-Joy, Sacrifice marks another high-profile action role following her recent run of genre work, while Evans takes on a part that plays directly with his own Hollywood leading-man image.

Background

Gavras brought Sacrifice to Toronto as one of the festival’s starrier premieres, pairing two major stars with a pitch-black satirical premise. The 37% Rotten Tomatoes score suggests critics were split on whether the film’s over-the-top concept landed, though reviews at the festival stage don’t always predict how audiences respond once a title lands on a streaming platform, according to CBR.
