Rian Johnson Reveals Amazing Knives Out 3 for 2025

Rian Johnson and Netflix, the creators of the acclaimed Knives Out films, have announced a third film in the saga. The film will be titled Wake Up, Dead Man, and be released in 2025. At the time of writing, very few details were given on the film.

Rian Johnson and Knives Out are two of the most beloved names in cinema. The director has given us two of the most revolutionary murder mysteries in cinematic history. Attempting to figure out what this next story will be about will be just as much of a mystery as these films themselves. Here is a summary of the biggest takeaways fans need to know.

What do We Know About This Film?

According to a teaser posted by Netflix on X (formerly Twitter), this new film will be titled Wake Up, Dead Man. The teaser narrated a descent through the previous two titles before landing on the latest. All that appeared was a coffin and the film’s title in a decidedly gothic font. Given the subtext, it’s heavily implied that a funeral will be at the center of the latest mystery. Naturally, Daniel Craig was confirmed to return as Benoit Blanc.

As for the title, there are many ways to interpret it. The title comes from a song in keeping with the previous two films. The eponymous song was released in 1997 by the Irish rock band U2 led by Bono. The song heavily focuses on a man calling to Jesus, a figure who himself rose from the dead. As such, one can expect possible elements of a supposedly dead person returning with a surrounding mystery.

What it Knives Out?

To many viewers, Knives Out is seen as the predefinite murder mystery film in the modern era. While the murder mystery genre has existed and evolved since the days of Agatha Christie, Knives Out still revolutionized the genre. The first film was known for clever misdirections, turning the genre on its head, and breathing new life into old cliches. Furthermore, there was a heavy layer of social commentary in the film.

As for its sequel from Netflix, Glass Onion, it built upon everything we loved about the first film. The film followed an Elon Musk-esque tech billionaire taking his five celebrity friends to an isolated Greek island to celebrate. As one might expect, the hilarious satire at the heart of its cerebral mystery was back in full force.

Who is Rian Johnson?

Rian Johnson is one of the most acclaimed directors among film buffs and lay audiences in recent years. He first rose to fame by directing several episodes for the acclaimed series Breaking Bad, including the fan-favorite chapter “Ozymandias.” He gained further acclaim through the time travel film Looper. However, his reputation faltered after directing The Last Jedi, the most controversial movie in the Star Wars saga.

However, all that would change with the release of Knives Out, which brought his status back as a genius director. Through his success in both films, Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in 2023. With such a reputation for directing mysteries, there is no doubt that Wake Up, Dead Man will be a worthy chapter in the saga.
