“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” Is A Great Second Round For The Famous Character

Beetlejuice 2

Hollywood has a history of bringing long-dead movies like Beetlejuice back to life with a reanimated sequel. After the original Beetlejuice proved so successful after its release in 1988, there was little doubt that Tim Burton would delve into the grave and bring everyone’s favorite demon back to life.

Though rumors that a sequel was in the works for decades, Burton was adamant that he would only consider making one if Michael Keaton would reprise his role as the title character. Once Keaton’s return was certain, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was ready to be made. Released on September 6, the sequel gives audiences the opportunity to see the prankster demon “bio-exorcist” that taught the living who was in charge once again.

Beetlejuice’s First Outing

The original Beetlejuice movie featured a great cast led by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis. Baldwin and Davis play the newly dead Maitlands, whose deaths are turned around when Michael Keaton as the gonzo “bio-exorcist” Beetlejuice comes into their afterlives. The Maitlands originally work with Beetlejuice to drive the Deetz family, played by Jeffrey Hones, Catherine O’Hara, and Winona Ryder in her star-making role, out of their old house, until Beetlejuice starts to go too far in his exorcisms of the living.

Now that someone has said his name three times (again), Beetlejuice’s triumphant return to the box office has unleashed a mayhem of success. This sequel horror comedy has scored a massive $110 million in its opening weekend, giving the movie the second-biggest debut of all time for a movie released in September.

David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research, said, “This is a sensational opening for a comedy sequel 36 years after the first film. In 1988, ‘Beetlejuice’ was an offbeat story that started slowly and over subsequent weeks became a hit. This time, audiences know what to expect and offbeat looks even better next to the usual storylines. It’s a mainstream smash.”

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: A Worthy Successor

This spoiler-free review delves into Burton’s new take on what happens when the living deal with the dead. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice returns to the Deetz family about thirty years after the first movie. The characters who return feels very close to their original selves with some new additions to account for the time gap between the events of the two movies.

Thankfully, Beetlejuice himself hasn’t changed much over time. Michael Keaton returns to play the character with the same energy and passion he had back in the 1980s. He makes everyone laugh as only he can with memorable lines and gags and an overexuberant energy that fits the movie perfectly. Despite sometimes feeling a little unfocused, there isn’t a dull moment in the movie.

As in the original movie, the soundtrack is full of great songs. One scene includes the return of the memorable “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song),” this time performed by Alfie Davis and the Sylvia Young Theatre School Choir. The film’s soundtrack also includes “Margaritaville” by Jimmy Buffett, “Tragedy” by the Bee Gees, and “MacArthur Park” by Richard Harris and Donna Summer.

Final Thoughts

Overall, this sequel is incredible and worthy of the original. If you liked the first movie and want more of the ghost with the most, you should give the new movie a shot. Don’t be afraid to laugh at the cartoonish afterlife effects and see how the living and the dead collide and try to survive each other.
