Rascal Does Not Dream fans attending Dear Friend during its first week in Japanese theaters will receive a new short story by series creator Hajime Kamoshida. The film opens in Japan on October 16, 2026, making the bonus part of its theatrical launch.
The announcement gives early moviegoers something to read alongside the film. It is a prose story, so viewers should distinguish it from a bonus animated scene or an additional episode.
Rascal Does Not Dream adds a new short story
MANTANWEB’s October 3 report on the theater bonus identifies the Japanese title as Seishun Buta Yarō wa Tea Garden no Yume o Miru. In English, it is rendered as Rascal Does Dream of a Tea Garden, with “does dream” distinguishing it from the usual series naming pattern.
Kamoshida wrote the story, and original-series illustrator Keeji Mizoguchi provided its cover illustration. For fans who enjoy the light novels as well as the anime, that pairing is a welcome connection to the books.
Dear Friend heads toward the finale
The official Dear Friend film website presents the movie as the conclusion of the anime’s adolescent fantasy story. Its introduction brings together the high-school and university chapters and points toward answers to the mysteries surrounding Adolescence Syndrome.
The story is set around Fujisawa and Yokohama. Those familiar settings accompany the changing lives of the characters rather than turning this into a separate, unrelated adventure.
A returning creative team
The official site credits Sōichi Masui as director, Masahiro Yokotani for composition and screenplay, and Satomi Tamura for character design. CloverWorks produces the animation, with fox capture plan providing the music.
That returning team gives Rascal Does Not Dream continuity as it reaches this stage. The bonus booklet is an additional reason for readers of the novels to follow the release, without needing to make claims about its place in canon before reading it.
What to check before attending
The announcement concerns the Japanese theatrical opening week. Readers elsewhere should check their local distributor for screening dates and any separate theater promotions rather than assume the same booklet will be available internationally.
