United Airlines will stop counting flight segments toward MileagePlus elite status starting in 2027, shifting entirely to a dollars-spent system and raising the bar for its top-tier Premier 1K status. The airline announced the MileagePlus Premier status changes as part of a broader overhaul of how members earn elite recognition.

Under the new structure, elite status will be based solely on Premier Qualifying Points, or PQPs, rather than a combination of PQPs and Premier Qualifying Flights. Members currently earn 1 PQP for every dollar spent on United flights, and that dollar-based formula will now be the only way to rack up qualifying points toward status.

The Main Development

United confirmed it will drop Premier Qualifying Flights from its elite status formula in 2027, meaning the number of trips a flyer takes will no longer factor into their status calculation. Instead, spending will determine where members land among United’s Premier tiers.

The airline also raised the PQP threshold required to reach Premier 1K, its highest standard elite tier, though United has not specified the new point total or how much higher it climbs compared with the current requirement.

Jarad Fisher, United’s president of MileagePlus, said the goal was to simplify how members track their progress toward status. “We thought it made more sense for them to have one, consistent metric that actually was something that they can focus on across the board between their flight activity, their engagement with the airline,” Fisher said. “And, really making it so that we can invest more in the people who are investing in us.”

What It Means For Premier 1K Members And Other Travelers

For travelers chasing Premier 1K status requirements, the change means frequent short, cheap flights will no longer help pad a status bid the way they once did. Every PQP will now have to come from actual dollars spent on United tickets or through cobranded credit card spending, since segment counts disappear from the formula entirely.

United’s co-branded credit cards offer a path to help offset the new all-spending model. The United Explorer Card earns 1 PQP per $20 spent, capped at 1,000 PQPs a year. The United Quest Card earns 1 PQP per $20 spent up to 18,000 PQPs annually, and the United Club Card earns 1 PQP per $15 spent with an annual cap of 32,000 PQPs.

Fisher said credit card spending can help members adjust to the new rules. “For those folks, obviously, getting a United card will be a way for them to actually bridge that gap,” he said, referring to members who relied heavily on flight segments to reach their status level.

Background And Context

United is also offering a cushion for current cardholders during the transition. MileagePlus members with eligible United credit cards will receive a deposit equal to 5% of the PQPs required for their current status level once the new status year begins in 2027. Members who open an eligible United card by Dec. 31 will also receive a PQP deposit toward the next status year.

The overhaul arrives as United reshapes its loyalty benefits more broadly, following other recent moves such as its status match offer tied to Delta flyers and Starlink access. United has also drawn attention for changes to premium cabin pricing, detailed in a report on United’s base fares hitting first class.

What’s Next

The new PQP-only system and the higher Premier 1K threshold take effect in 2027, and United says the changes will apply to members as they work toward 2028 status in the new year, according to The Points Guy. Travelers aiming for status should track PQP totals from flight spending and eligible credit card purchases rather than counting individual trips, and those considering a United cobranded card have until Dec. 31 to open one and qualify for a PQP deposit toward the next status year.
