Holland America’s Zuiderdam to Retrace Pan Am Clipper Routes in 2027

Holland America Line will send its ship Zuiderdam on a 28-day voyage next fall that retraces the Caribbean and Central American routes once flown by Pan Am’s famous Clipper seaplanes, according to Travel Weekly. The Holland America Pan Am Clipper cruise will call at 18 destinations, about 13 of which appeared on Pan Am’s original flight itinerary decades ago.

The Main Development

Holland America Line has licensed the Pan Am name, marks and intellectual property from Pan American World Airways, a division of Pan American Global Holdings, Travel Weekly reported. The agreement allows the cruise line to build an entire itinerary around the history of Pan Am’s Clipper seaplanes, which used boat-like hulls to land in harbors throughout the Caribbean rather than at traditional airports.

Passengers on the original Clipper routes dined on special china while airborne, then came ashore to relax in Clipper Club lounges and check into hotels at each stop. Holland America is working to echo that experience onboard Zuiderdam, pairing the ship’s stops with tours built around locations tied to Pan Am’s history, including Colon, Panama, and St. John’s, Antigua.

Paul Grigsby, Holland America Line’s vice president of itinerary planning, said the ship will dock or tender as close as possible to where the Clipper seaplanes once touched down. “The ship can’t completely re-create the routes flown by Pan Am planes, it cannot cruise to Cuba or Venezuela, for example, but it can get close,” Grigsby said, according to Travel Weekly.

What It Means For Fans

Travelers booking the cruise can expect more than scenic overlap with Pan Am’s old flight paths. Onboard dining will include Pan Am-inspired dishes such as shrimp cocktail served with boiled egg, asparagus and Louis dressing, along with Dover sole stuffed with crabmeat and baked in puff pastry. Guests can also purchase the Clipper Cocktail, a drink made with rum, Dolin Blanc and grenadine.

The sailing will feature expert speakers and special tours tied to Pan Am’s legacy, giving history-minded travelers programming beyond the standard port excursions. For fans of aviation history or anyone who remembers flying Pan Am before the airline ceased operations in 1991, the itinerary offers a chance to physically retrace routes that once defined Caribbean travel.

Background And Context

Pan American Global Holdings has spent time working toward a revival of the Pan Am brand, and this cruise partnership marks one visible step in that effort. The Pan Am Museum Foundation is also backing the initiative, contributing through community engagement, educational storytelling and promotional support, per Travel Weekly.

Craig Carter, CEO of Pan Am Global Holdings, said interest in the airline’s history runs deep across generations. “The younger generation is hearing stories from their parents and grandparents about what travel used to be like. We’re trying to make sure we’re upholding the great history of Pan Am, but also the nostalgia. People are screaming for it,” Carter said, according to Travel Weekly.

What’s Next

The 28-day Zuiderdam cruise is set for fall 2027, though Travel Weekly’s report did not specify exact departure dates or the full roster of the 18 ports involved. Holland America Line has not released additional booking details, pricing or cabin information tied to the sailing as of the report.
