Pope Leo XIV has called church leaders to Rome for a weeklong closed-door conference examining how dioceses worldwide have put into practice Pope Francis’ 2016 document on family ministry, “The Joy of Love,” according to The Associated Press. The gathering, running Oct. 7 to Oct. 14, 2026, draws 187 participants and marks one of Leo’s most direct engagements yet with a cornerstone of his predecessor’s pontificate.

The conference focuses on supporting families in difficult circumstances, a central aim of Francis’ original document. It does not reopen the text itself for revision, according to the Vatican.

The Main Development

Gabriella Gambino, undersecretary in the Vatican’s family office, is organizing the meeting. She said the gathering is meant to take stock rather than critique. “This is not a continuation of the synod itself, but rather an opportunity to assess where we stand,” Gambino said, according to the AP. “It does not mean passing judgment as in school, praising or criticizing the text itself, but rather learning from the experience gained since its publication.”

Rev. Giacomo Costa, with the Vatican’s synod office, said organizers do not know what direction the discussions will take. “We can’t foresee what themes will emerge from the bishops’ reflections, from their experiences,” Costa said, per the AP.

The AP reported that “The Joy of Love” isn’t up for rewriting, amending or scrapping. Instead, the closed-door sessions are meant to understand how bishops have incorporated the document’s teaching into their local communities.

What It Means For Families

Francis released “The Joy of Love” in 2016 following a yearlong consultation on how the Catholic Church could better minister to families, according to the AP. The document addressed how parishes accompany households facing hardship, divorce and other complicated circumstances.

Its most contested element came through footnote guidance allowing bishops and priests to let civilly remarried Catholics receive Communion on a case-by-case basis, following what Francis described as a spiritual journey of discernment. Church teaching otherwise holds that civilly remarried Catholics cannot receive sacraments without an annulment, since they are considered to be living in sin and committing adultery, the AP reported.

Francis held that God’s mercy extends particularly to sinners and viewed the Eucharist as nourishment for the weak rather than a reward reserved for the faithful who have no struggles, according to the AP.

Background And Context

The document became one of the most divisive of Francis’ papacy. It drew sustained opposition from conservative Catholics, some of whom accused Francis of heresy over the Communion guidance, the AP reported. Leo’s decision to convene this review puts him in the position of managing that unresolved tension without altering the underlying text, at least based on what Vatican organizers have said publicly.

The source material does not detail how Leo himself has characterized his approach to Francis’ broader legacy, nor does it include specific examples of how individual dioceses have applied the 2016 document. Those details were not part of the AP’s reporting on the conference.

What’s Next

The closed-door sessions continue through Oct. 14, 2026. Gambino and Costa indicated the outcome will depend on what bishops report from their own dioceses rather than a predetermined agenda. No changes to “The Joy of Love” itself are expected to come out of the meeting, according to the Vatican officials cited by the AP.
