Rory Macleod, Grammy-Nominated Artist, Dies After Being Struck by Repeat-Offender Driver
Grammy-nominated musician Rory Macleod, 70, has died after being struck by a vehicle while walking his dogs in Hope Valley, Rhode Island, on December 6, 2025. The driver, identified as a repeat offender with more than 100 prior arrests, is now facing multiple criminal charges as authorities continue to investigate the crash. Macleod’s death has startled the music community and reignited debate over public safety and criminal justice oversight.
Accident Details and Charges
According to Entertainment Weekly, “The press release issued by Chief Mark Carrier noted that the incident occurred at approximately 7:21 a.m. that Wednesday. A car traveling eastbound down Spring St. in Hope Valley, R.I., veered out of its lane, striking ‘several objects, including two telephone poles and the pedestrian walking his dogs in the shoulder.'” The pedestrian, identified as Macleod, was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The Hopkinton Police Department identified the driver as 41-year-old Shannon N. Godbout.
Police reports indicate Godbout has a criminal history exceeding 100 arrests and 40 traffic citations, and was found in possession of illegal narcotics and materials consistent with distribution at the scene. She has been charged with “driving to endanger resulting in death” and narcotics possession with intent to distribute, with additional charges possible as the investigation progresses.
Legacy, Grammy Nomination, and Community Reaction
Macleod was widely respected for his decades of contributions to blues and roots music. Best known for his bass work with the swing and jump-blues ensemble Roomful of Blues, he earned a Grammy nomination in the 1980s and was inducted into the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame.
In a statement shared by the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame, leaders described Macleod as “a guiding light in the roots music community” whose impact extended beyond performance into education and mentorship. Roomful of Blues also paid tribute, saying, “Our deepest condolences to Rory Macleod’s family, friends and all of his fans” and honoring his “diverse musical contributions” and gentle spirit.
Ongoing Investigation and Public Safety Concerns
Local officials noted that Godbout’s extensive criminal record and continued ability to operate a vehicle despite past offenses have raised questions about monitoring systems for repeat offenders. As the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office reviews the case, lawmakers and safety advocates are calling for renewed focus on how individuals with significant legal histories are supervised to prevent further tragedies.
Macleod’s family and fans are planning memorial events to celebrate the musician’s life and legacy in the coming weeks.
