Mark Harmon and Michael Weatherly will share the screen for the first time in a decade when “NCIS: Origins” airs its reunion episode Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 10 p.m. ET on CBS. The episode brings back their original “NCIS” characters, Leroy Jethro Gibbs and Tony DiNozzo, according to Variety.

Harmon and Weatherly spent 13 seasons on screen together on “NCIS” before Weatherly’s character departed the flagship series. The two last appeared together in the Season 13 finale, 10 years ago, Variety reported.

What’s Confirmed About The “NCIS: Origins” Harmon Weatherly Reunion

In the episode, Gibbs returns to NCIS headquarters in Washington, D.C., to ask DiNozzo for help after Gibbs is shot by unidentified assailants, according to Variety. DiNozzo has since become the agency’s director, a role he steps into as the story’s present-day authority figure.

Weatherly rejoined the “NCIS” franchise this season when the flagship show returned for Season 24 on Oct. 6, Variety reported. Harmon, meanwhile, serves as an executive producer on “NCIS: Origins” and appears in every episode of the prequel series this season as part of a present-day mystery tied to his character’s time at Camp Pendleton in the 1990s.

What It Means For Fans

The pairing closes a long gap for viewers who followed Gibbs and DiNozzo through more than a decade of cases. Gibbs relocated to Alaska after Harmon exited “NCIS” during Season 19, according to TV Insider. The shooting storyline gives the franchise a reason to pull Gibbs back into active cases and put him face to face with the man who once called him boss.

For “NCIS: Origins,” the crossover also ties its 1990s-set mystery arc more directly to the present-day “NCIS” timeline, since Harmon’s character already anchors the prequel’s ongoing story about his Camp Pendleton past.

Background

“NCIS: Origins” functions as a prequel to the long-running “NCIS” franchise, following a younger version of Gibbs. Harmon’s dual role as star and executive producer has kept him connected to the franchise even after leaving the original series. Weatherly’s return to the “NCIS” mothership this fall as part of Season 24 set the stage for the character crossover with “Origins.”

What’s Next

The reunion episode of “NCIS: Origins” airs Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 10 p.m. ET on CBS. No further details about additional appearances or storylines beyond the shooting plot have been announced.
