Golden Globes: Who Will Win Best Original Song In A Motion Picture?

With the Golden Globes airing Sunday night, it is time to predict who will win the award for Best Original Song in a Motion Picture. There are a lot of great movies this year with solid soundtracks. Let’s take a look at the six nominees in the category this year.

Miley Cyrus – “Dream As One” from “Avatar: Fire and Ash”

From “Avatar: Fire and Ash” comes Miley Cyrus’s “Dream As One.” The song was written by Cyrus, Mark Ronson, Andrew Wyatt, and Simon Franglen. In 2023, Cyrus and “Avatar” franchise writer/director James Cameron were both inducted asย Disney Legendsย at theย D23 Awards. Cyrus, a big fan of the franchise, told Cameron at the ceremony that she was available if he needed her. Cameron took her up on that, asking her to write a song for the closing credits of the franchise’s third film.

HUNTR/X – “Golden” from “KPop Demon Hunters”

HUNTR/X is the name of the band in the animated movie “KPop Demon Hunters.” Singers EJAE (Rumi),ย Audrey Nuna (Mira), andย Rei Ami (Zoey) provide the singing voices for the band members. “Golden” was written by Joong Gyu Kwak,ย Yu Han Lee,ย Hee Dong Nam,ย Jeong Hoon Seo,ย Park Hong Jun,ย Kim Eun-jae (EJAE),ย and Mark Sonnenblick. The song topped the charts in the United States and more than 30 countries, and was certified gold or higher in 15 countries. The song is nominated for four Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year. Golden has already taken home 13 awards worldwide and is nominated or shortlisted for 38 more, including the Grammys.

Miles Caton – “I Lied to You” from “Sinners”

From “Sinners (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)”

On a soundtrack that features names like blues legend Buddy Guy, Hailee Steinfeld, and Alice in Chains’ Jerry Cantrell, it is actor/singer Miles Caton who drew all the attention on the “Sinners” soundtrack. Caton’s “I Lied to You,” written by Raphael Saadiq andย Ludwig Gรถransson, is one of five songs the 20-year-old performed on the soundtrack. Caton already took home a Critics’ Choice Award for Best Young Performer for his acting in “Sinners.” Can he grab an award for his singing talents in the flick as well? If not, he still has a chance to win a World Soundtrack Award later this year.

Cynthia Erivo – “No Place Like Home” from “Wicked: For Good”

Following the popularity of the music in the first “Wicked” film, it comes as no surprise that the sequel would see two songs receive nominations here. Stephen Schwartz wrote both songs, Cynthia Erivo’s “No Place Like Home” and Ariana Grande‘s “The Girl in the Bubble.” “No Place Like Home” was also nominated for a Hollywood Music in Media Award, an Astra Creative Arts Award, and a Society of Composers & Lyricists Award.

Grande’s “Popular” from the first “Wicked” Movie charted at #53 on the Billboard Hot 100. The sequel’s “The Girl in the Bubble” was only able to make it to #100. It was, however, very successful in the UK and New Zealand. Grande’s song was nominated for the same awards as Erivo’s, but additionally received a nomination for a Critics’ Choice Award.

Nick Cave and Bryce Dessner – “Train Dreams” from “Train Dreams”

Like the two “Wicked” nominees, “Train Dreams,” written and performed by Nick Cave and Bryce Dessner, was also nominated for an Astra for “Best Original Song.” It was also nominated alongside Grande’s song for a Critics’ Choice Award. Dessner composed the film’s entire soundtrack

Predicted Winner: “Golden”

While all these songs are worthy nominees, “Golden” appears to stand head and shoulders above its competition. The song was a worldwide smash. It spent eight weeks at #1 in the U.S. and has been on the Hot 100 for 25 weeks and counting. The song has set records, grabbed awards, and sold millions of copies. That domination most likely will continue at the Golden Globes on Sunday night.
