Watching horror films is an iconic part of the October month leading up to the spooky season of Halloween. With so many different franchises and stand-alone films to choose from, it is hard to decide what to watch on your scary night in. Here are three options of horror films that will have you trembling for more.
Late Night With The Devil

Late Night with the Devil, written and directed by Cameron Cairnes and Colin Cairnes, is a film about when a live television broadcast goes horribly wrong, unleashing evil into the nation’s living rooms. Overall, IMDb rates the film 7.0 out of 10 with 80,000 votes. Meanwhile, the Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes is at 97%, and the critics’ consensus states, “Delightfully dark, Late Night with the Devil proves possession horror isn’t played out—and serves as an outstanding showcase for David Dastmalchian.”
The audience score, or popcorn score, comes in at 81% with a consensus of, “Late Night with the Devil does a great job of recapturing the late-night TV of the ’70s, and horror fans will appreciate the way it doesn’t rely on jump scares, although they might not be satisfied with the ending.” Late Night with the Devil is a highly recommended horror film for movie buffs, especially in October, making it fit perfectly on this list of options.
The Halloween Series
The first installment of the Halloween franchise hit theaters in 1978 on October 25th. Directed by John Carpenter and starring Donald Pleasence, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Tony Moran, the film skyrocketed in popularity with audiences worldwide. IMDb summarizes the film as, “Fifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois, to kill again.” Halloween has won many Saturn Awards, including Best DVD/Blu-Ray Collection, with a nomination for Best Horror Film as well.
The franchise took its newfound success from the first Halloween movie and created 12 other films, the most recent being Halloween Ends (2022). Michael Myers will go down in horror history books as one of the most iconic slasher villains of all time, making the franchise a great selection for this October.
Oddity
Oddity is a film that follows a psychic medium who attempts to uncover the truth behind her sister’s murder at the scene of the crime. Directed by Damien McCarthy and starring Carol Bracken, Johnny French, and Steve Wall, the film received a 6.7 out of 10 on IMDb with 16,000 votes; however, Oddity received 96% on the Tomatometer for Rotten Tomatoes and 77% for the Popcorn meter. The critics’ consensus says, “An elegant and spooky ghost story punctuated with clever jolts, Oddity hews to the fundamentals of fright and achieves shout-inducing results.” Oddity is one of the horror films you won’t see very often on a watch list simply because not a lot of people know about it.
Final Thoughts
There are so many horror films that could make it onto this list; however, here are three great options to add to your October celebrations. Whether you are into new-age horror films or cult slasher classics, these films will send shivers down your spine. Special mentions should be given to Nightmare on Elm Street (or all 80’s slasher horror films), Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (for a film in theaters), the Alien Franchise, The Shining, Hereditary, and so many more.
