Zootopia 2 smashes box office records

Zootopia 2 Smashes Records, Surpasses $1 Billion Globally in 17 Days

“Zootopia 2” breaks records and joins “Zootopia,” “Inside Out 2”, “Barbie,” and “Spider-Man: Far from Home” in the billion-dollar movie club. Released on November 26th, Zootopia 2 is the fastest animated movie and the second Disney film this year to surpass a billion dollars, alongside Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch movie. The “Zootopia 2” cast included familiar voices such as Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Shakira, and Idris Elba. Almost 10 years since the first Zootopia was released, the highly anticipated sequel did not disappoint.

“Zootopia 2” Roars Past Billion

Congratulations to Disney, Officer Judy Hopps, her partner Nick Wilde, and the citizens of Zootopia on dominating box office sales. On Friday, December 12th, box office numbers indicated that “Zootopia 2” is expected to surpass $1 billion in sales following the weekend’s box office results.

According to Variety, for the opening weekend and the week of Thanksgiving, “Zootopia 2” earned $539 million globally and $158 million in North America. As of Friday morning, December 12th, the movie has over $986 million in sales over 17 days.

Breaking the record for the fastest-grossing movie to reach a billion, the numbers are projected to continue increasing as the film remains in theaters. Over Christmas break, going to the movie theater will be a great way to keep warm and entertain children.

Disney’s Billion-Dollar Movie Empire

Disney is in the billion-dollar movie-making business. With “Zootopia 2”, Disney has over 30 movies that have grossed over $1 billion. According to IMDb, Disney “own all 5 of the highest-grossing movies ever released theatrically.”

The top 5 highest-selling films in theaters are “Avatar” (2009), “Avengers : End Game” (2019), “Avatar: The Way of Water” (2022), “Titanic” (1997), and “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens” (2015). All movies grossed over 2 billion in sales.
