Netflix’s Biggest Action Franchise Gets Exciting Spinoff Update With Title & First Look Image

Netflix just dropped some major updates on its first TV spinoff for the franchise, and it looks like they aren’t cutting any corners. Lately they’ve been throwing massive piles of cash at the wall to see what sticks in the action genre. We’ve seen “The Gray Man” try to act cool with Ryan Gosling, and “Red Notice” rely heavily on the sheer charisma of The Rock and Ryan Reynolds. Although they racked up views, they haven’t exactly sparked a cultural movement or any immediate sequels.

The real winner in the streaming wars? That would be Chris Hemsworth’s gritty, bone-crunching “Extraction.” They’ve realized they’re sitting on a goldmine – we aren’t just getting a third movie; the universe is expanding in a serious way.

Mercenary: An Extraction Series” Gets a Title and First Look

We knew a series was in development, but details were scarce until now. The show is officially titled “Mercenary: An Extraction Series.” It’s a bit of a mouthful, sure, but it gets the point across. The Netflix series is being helmed by Glen Mazzara (the guy who ran “The Walking Dead,” so expect high stakes and probably a high body count) and features the incredibly charming Omar Sy.

If you’ve watched “Lupin,” you know Sy has the chops to carry a Netflix series. In “Mercenary,” he’s playing Kalidou Diallo, a character that sounds every bit as tortured and dangerous as Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake. The spinoff’s official logline puts Diallo in Libya on a mission to save hostages while dealing with his own “deep emotional wounds.”

It sounds like classic “Extraction” DNA: high-octane violence mixed with sad men staring way off into the distance. Netflix released a first-look image of Sy on set, and frankly, he looks ready to do some damage.

From Ireland to Morocco: Production Updates and Cast

This isn’t just quickly shot on a studio soundstage in Burbank. Netflix’s production for “Mercenary” has been globe-trotting. Filming kicked off in Ireland (which recently wrapped) and has now moved to Morocco. That stark contrast in scenery – from green, rainy isles to the desert heat – suggests we’re in for a visually stunning ride.

The cast surrounding Sy is stacked, too. We’re looking at “Game of Thrones” alum Natalie Dormer (who improves literally everything she is in), Boyd Holbrook from “The Sandman,” and “Justified: City Primeval.” Also in it is Sacha Dhawan from “Doctor Who.” It’s a solid lineup that suggests Netflix is treating this spinoff with the same weight as its blockbuster films.

The Universe Expands East with “Extraction: TYGO

As if one series wasn’t enough, we’ve got confirmation on a film spinoff titled “Extraction: TYGO.” This project is taking the mayhem to South Korea. The plot follows a former child soldier turned mercenary, keeping with the franchise’s dark themes.

The casting here is honestly wild. We’ve got Don Lee (the powerhouse from “Train to Busan” and Marvel’s “Eternals”), Lee Jin-uk from “Squid Game,” and – in a move that’s gonna break the internet – BLACKPINK’s Lisa. It’s a smart play by the streamer to tap into the massive global fanbase of Korean cinema and K-pop simultaneously.

When Do We Get “Extraction 3?”

With all this talk about new shows and movies, you might be wondering about the OG. Don’t worry, Tyler Rake isn’t retiring yet. “Extraction 3” is a go, and it has director and stuntman extraordinaire Sam Hargrave returning to ensure those action sequences are insane.

However, patience is going to be key here. Filming for the third main installment is slated for 2026, which puts a likely release date somewhere in 2027. It looks like the strategy is to use “Mercenary” and “TYGO” to bridge the gap, keeping fans fed while Hemsworth gears up for round three. It’s a bold strategy, but given the talent involved, it might just work.
